‘When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’

-
‘The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’

-
‘The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master — that’s all.’

-

Alice was too much puzzled to say anything; so after a minute Humpty Dumpty began again. ‘They’ve a temper, some of them — particularly verbs: they’re the proudest — adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs — however, I can manage the whole lot of them! Impenetrability! That’s what I say!’

-
‘Would you tell me please,’ said Alice, ‘what that means?’

-

‘Now you talk like a reasonable child,’ said Humpty Dumpty, looking very much pleased. ‘I meant by “impenetrability” that we’ve had enough of that subject, and it would be just as well if you’d mention what you mean to do next, as I suppose you don’t mean to stop here all the rest of your life.’

-
‘That’s a great deal to make one word mean,’ Alice said in a thoughtful tone.

  1. How much stranger has the world become since Lewis Carroll wrote his sequel to Alice in Wonderland? Maybe not so strange indeed but definitely none the wiser. Puzzlement still plagues us today in trying to figure out just what is going on in the grand scheme of things in this crumbling world of ours. Impenetrability: kind of fits today’s times, doesn’t it?

    • What’s weird is how little the world has changed. Different technology, same human brains.

      • You would think the human race would LEARN! Duh!

        • Apparently not. That’s why I am so fascinated by history. Whatever we think has never happened before … has happened before. Probably many times. We’re a pretty stupid species.

      • Does history indeed repeat itself, or is it merely human nature that finds itself spinning out of control? I think you have already answered this question…LOL:>)

        • History doesn’t repeat itself. People repeat themselves. We do the same stuff over and over because we pay no attention to the past, nor do we learn from it. Each “occurrance” of whatever it is differs in its details from any previous event, but there are enough similarities to make historical “kissin’ cousins.” In the U.S., there have been at least 3 other stolen elections and quite a few really appalling presidents. Europe has managed to repeat the same wars and destruction so many times I can’t keep track. China too. Nothing is exactly the same, but nothing is really unique. We could avoid a lot of pain and misery, but we choose otherwise. The simple lesson that if you do the same thing, you will get the same result, is one humans do not seem to learn. We do the same stuff and assume the result will be different *this *time. When it isn’t, everyone is shocked. Double duh.
