How many states were trying to secede after the 2012 election?

Not one single state filed anything suggesting secession.

Why? First, because no state government was stupid enough to lose the benefits they get from the central government. Secession is illegal. The Civil War decided the issue and there’s no going back. All of those petitions were put together by groups of discontented sore losers who didn’t understand in the United States, an election decides the issue.

We don’t govern by petition. We protect your right to petition (thank you, First Amendment), but that only means we don’t throw you in jail for doing it, not that your petition has force of law.

The U.S. does not govern by opinion. We vote. No matter how often or how loudly you tell the world about your dissatisfaction on the Internet, on social media sites, or anything else, it’s the ballot box where we collect and count votes. We have a constitution. We have laws. We vote. We count votes. The winner is decided, the loser takes his marbles and goes home.

A petition by the losers of an election does not trump the right of the people of the United States to freely elect their representatives. That you have the right to petition doesn’t mean your petition is going to change anything. Its existence is a testament to how free a country this is. Most other places, you’d be jailed or shot.

The reason that not a single state government has petitioned for secession is because no one running a state is as stupid as these petitioners. They know they can’t go it on their own and aren’t going to try. Not to mention that a state trying to secede is considered to be in rebellion, for which there are serious penalties. As for the argument that we seceded from England, we were never part of England. We were a colony, a far different legal position than that held by a state. We did not secede from England. We rebelled against English rule. We are heroes because we won, but had we lost, it would have been ugly. Rebellion is a serious matter and the price of losing is dreadful. Rebels are hanged or shot, pretty much universally, so anyone who thinks they ought to rebel needs to be prepared to die.

AN HISTORICAL NOTE: The American colonists’ first choice was not to break away from England. We wanted the rights of full British citizenship and full representation in Parliament. In other words, far from preferring rebellion, we wanted inclusion. We wanted our status as a colony upgraded to the British equivalent of statehood … something that our American secessionist wannabes already have … and are too ignorant to value.

No one is going to secede. Not now, not in the forseeable future. Maybe after the alien invasion, things will change. Until then, secession is a non-issue.

As for all the mindless, blood-thirsty idiots who think a civil war is a good idea:

congress in session

The Civil War cost more than 620,000 American lives, above and below the Mason-Dixon line. Death doesn’t care what color uniform you wear or what color skin you have. Dead is dead. The war between the states caused more American deaths than all other wars this nation has fought combined. ALL of them combined. I don’t know the actual percentage of the population that perished in that hideous conflict, the gory legacy of which we are still dealing with 150 years later, but it was a very substantial percentage. Anyone who suggests that doing that again is a good idea is a criminal.

I don’t care what you believe. No one who values human life, believes in God, or has any kind of conscience or moral compass would suggest we take up arms and start slaughtering each other.

The Peacemakers.

If we are unable to live together, we will not survive as a nation. How can anyone claim to care about this country and then suggest we destroy it because they don’t like the President? Does this sound like patriotism?

There are too many people who have yet to grasp the concept that in a contest, there are always winners and losers. You, over there, with the sign and the sour face. You lost. Deal with it.

Respect the constitution. Work within our excellent system of laws. If you don’t respect our government enough to honor its fundamental principles, you really should go live somewhere else, if you can find anywhere else that will have your sorry asses.

Does it surprise anyone that the “leaders” of this bogus “movement” to secede are largely from the same states that produced the glorious Civil War? You think race might have something to do with it?

The number of signatories, assuming that they could be verified as real people, does not come close to a majority of citizens of any state — nor even enough people to elect someone to congress. It’s a bunch of malcontents trying to get media attention. In other words, sore losers.

    • Thanks. I think a lot of people think that there are states trying to secede. They don’t realize that this is not what’s happening at all.

  2. I would like to say that I would side with the Declaration of Independence here. A goverment derives its powers from the consent of the governed. When the people no longer wish to be governed by the corupted then they have a morale right and obligation to alter or abolish that goverment. In my opinion secedeing from the union is a way to abolish said goverment without the resulting war. But sadly the fact is the only way to seperate from the union is to go to war because the goverment will not let them go anyway else. I believe two questions should be asked in reguards to this propsal by the states. Do you want to secede from the Union? Are you willing to take up arms against any invaders that are ready to stop you from secedeing from the union? Without the second there is no need for the first.

    • The past election clearly shows the consent of the governed, whether you personally agree or not. That not everyone agrees is what we call “normal” in a republican government. You see, whoever you are, that’s the nature of an election, that we have a choice. In a monarchy or tyranny, you might get to vote, but there’s no real choice. The winner is pre-determined, if there’s an election at all. In our elections, if the majority had elected Romeny, he would be president. If the majority in the States had preferred Republican candidates, they would have been elected. They were not elected, which means that you are not a majority of anything. You can whine and snivel all you want and you are lucky to live in a country that protects your right to whine, snivel, and sign petitions withnout being arrested for treason.

The election demonstrated that the majority of citizens thinks you are a bunch of wackos. I’m with them. Your friends can agree with you, but you are so very far from a majority it’s laughable. YOU are laughable. At best, you’re a sore loser and no kind of patriot. Patriots don’t give up on their country because they don’t like the current president or policies. Patriots hang on in there and try to help their country. If you don’t like this nation, find one that suits you better, assuming any country on earth wants you, which I doubt. Anyone willing to abandon their nation because they lost a free election is not the kind of citizen anyone wants.

I have neither patience nor sympathy for you or your cause. You’re at best a bunch of sore losers and at worst, a bunch of traitors. If I were President — lucky for you I’m not — I’d lock up the whole lot of you. Fortunately for you, the Declaration of Independence is an important historical document, but not a legal document. It has never had any force of law. For that, we have a thing called “the Constitution.”

The right of states to secede was settled by the bloody Civil War. You lost that one, too, only it cost 620,000 (or more) lives. How many lives do you figure you are worth?

My answer is NONE. Go back to the hole you crawled out of and take your yammering friends with you. Talk your treason in the dark. That’s where traitors usually have their little conversations. You don’t deserve to breathe the same air as real citizens.

      • so much for fredom of speach. You only want to hear those who agree with you rather than hold a debate. I never said that I accually support suceccion. I believe that it should only be done when all other avenues have been exhauseted. In this situation that has not happened. I just voiced that I think we have the right to secede. I never said we should.

        • I don’t agree. I’m sure you can find someone who does. There are always people willing to agree with pretty much any position, no matter how ridiculous and being that this is the US, you get to say it in public, no matter how many people don’t agree with you. Make no mistake. This isn’t a public forum. This is NOT a democracy. I do get to decide who posts and who doesn’t. So you are absolutely right: I do not care to debate this subject. In my opinion, 620,000 dead Americans are enough to decide the issue for good and all and there needs to be no further debate.

  3. Doesn’t matter that they are idiots. “We don’t govern by petition. We have a constitution. We have laws. We vote. We count the votes. The winner is decided, the loser goes home.” Wrong.

We don’t just have a constitution, we have AMENDMENTS, perhaps you should read them. Start with the FIRST AMENDMENT:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to PETITION the Government for a redress of grievances.” So we might not govern by petition, but the right to petition is protected.

    • First of all, THIS website is not a democracy. This is my virtual house and I don’t have to take crap from you or anybody else. Mind your manners or you’ll be out of here faster than a speeding bullet. I have edited your post to conform with my standards. Feel free to post elsewhere if you don’t like it.

I have read the amendments and the consititution. The right to petition for redress of grievances is protected by the first amendment. The right to secede from the union is not only not protected, but prohibited. Which amendment do you think will win this showdown? My money’s on the non-secession amendments that are down there in the middle with stuff about no more slavery. You can’t decide one amendment counts, then ignore the others. It doesn’t work that way.

Yes, we DO elect officials. The right to petition for redress of grievances does not trump the right of the people of the United States to freely elect their representatives. Moreover, the right to petition does not guarantee that the petition will be granted or even acknowledged. You can’t be jailed for trying, but a petition doesn’t trump the law of the land. No matter HOW many people sign it.

  4. I think you talked with my husband before you wrote this article! He was expressing much the same thoughts just yesterday. I have been reading several articles about the petitions being signed for secession and have wondered to myself “what possible good could be the outcome of such a result?” While all 50 states may have secession petitions in place, look at the ‘numbers’ which are a small pittance compared to each state’s population.

    • And NONE of them have any official sanction by any state government, but you’d never know that from media reports. It sounds like “the state of Texas” wants to seceded. That’s not true: just a bunch of sorehead malcontents.

    • If everyone would just stop gving them credence, they’d go away. They want publicity, and we oblige them. Maybe WE are the fools. I’ve been trying hard to ignore them until last night there was a headline “50 states try to secede” and I said that’s it. Because actually, NO states have tried to secede. Idiots. The are idiots. Now, back to your regularly scheduled program 🙂
