This must be one of the funniest sequences ever put on film. From “The Court Jester,” where’s the pellet with the poison and which is the brew that is true? I challenge you to remember which is which. I’ve been watching this for years and I still can’t repeat the sequence without tripping over my tongue.

An old TV news cameraman pal and I used to do the “vessel” tongue twister on assignments, making some of our interviewees squirm and or question our sanity. We played havoc with many public figures showing no mercy. We finally got payback as we pursued our silliness with Lucille Ball. She waited a minute and finally said, “Are you done boys?”. My Pal, Jack, and I exchanged glances. Lucy lowered the boom on us — “Get it? Got it? Good!!”. She grinned as we quickly wrapped the interview.
That must have been a refreshing role reversal for you and Jack. Wish I’d been a fly on the wall there.

Interestingly, that was the best stuff Lucy dished out during her Boston visit. Jack and I met her as she arrived at Logan. She was clearly tired but it was “game on” when she met us. Lucy came in to see daughter, Luci, who was doing a play. Lucy did several arranged “pressers” but none had the sparkle, spontaneity or fun of her airport put down of the two TV News clowns. Wish I had that for my goof reel tape along with the put downs by other legends. Hey, that’s how you get good stuff!! No one likes predictable, boring or rude.
I wish you had it on tape too.
This is my favorite movie of all time, bar non. Second is Noises Off. Are you familiar with that one? If not, rent it and roar!.
Never hear of “noises off” but if it’s funny, I’m willing to watch it. Let me see if it’s on my Amazon “free borrow” list. It might be if I’m lucky! Thanks for the tip!
Let me know by email i you watched it. I guarantee it will ekep you giggling most of the time you watch.
That’s the only leap of faith I can accept. Lovely, thank you!
Love, love, love this movie. Danny Kaye did a masterful job.
Favorite scenes: this one, the snapping fingers scene, and the “Get it? Got it. Good.” scene.
“the pellet with the poison?”
are you sure you don’t mean the ‘brew that is true?’
why .. it’s in the chalice from the palace … of course.
or was that flagon with dragon … ???
the vessel with the pestle .. ??
i think i’ll stick to pulque.
Garry and I used to do that bit all the time. When my granddaughter was little, we taught her to do it too. We still will almost automatically do the routine if anyone says “get it?” What else can you do but say got it and hope you get s finishing GOOD!
haaa !! great stuff. i watch that movie at least once every year – and it’s often on TCM, i turned Rose on to it and now she’s always badgering me to watch it all the time. Kaye was some kind of genius. the swordfighting scene with Rathbone is awesome …. what a movie !!!
Apparently Kaye learned to fence for the movie and was something of a natural. Word is that Rathbone, a very skilled fencer, was impressed, but Kaye was athletic and exceptionally well coordinated … and apparently a fast learner. I did some fencing in college. I wish I’d done more. It was fun!
