WHISTLING AND FISHING IN HEAVEN

As playlists go, this is short, but it says a lot. Not everyone has heard of John Prine, but he wrote many songs other people sing, and he sang a lot of them himself on various records, most of which I owned on vinyl. He has always been a favorite of mine, somehow cheering me up when I’m blue. So, whenever WordPress prompts for a playlist, he’s my go-to guy.

And lo and behold, there’s a new CD collection of his work available … just $10, double CD. I ordered it. Of course.

John Prine sings about life. He always had a sense of humor, too. He wrote great, witty lyrics, and singable melodies. What more do you need? Because to me, that’s music.

A sentiment … several sentiments … to which I can really relate. John Prine. Singing one of  my favorites. Musical philosophy.

The meaning of life according to John Prine. He sums it up for me. Thanks John!

Finally, a musical look at aging. Talk about summing it up. Tom Paxton was always a favorite. Which shows my age as much as my shining silver hair.

  1. I never heard of him either. I just listened to it and find his voice to be very different. I like different, love Marla Glen and Tom Waits, what puts me high up on the weird list. So now I know another weird one. Thanks Marilyn for putting another one on my list lol

  2. As you know I have problems with these play lists. I had never heard of John Prine, but I am sure most people have never heard of the music I listen to, most of it being European and Italian. I had a listen to your video and it is OK, something a bit different for me.

    • A lot of Americans have never heard of John Prine either. He’s better known as a composer than a singer. To be fair, he doesn’t have a great voice, but he’s written some wonderful songs. Including “The City of New Orleans,” made famous by other singers. Even though his voice is not lovely, I like him anyway. I enjoy taking the opportunity to introduce him to a wider audience, especially since he is fighting cancer and no longer able to perform.

      • Now I am with you. “City of New Orleans” yes any time, I have it by Arlo Guthrie on his CD The Best of Arlo Guthrie, but that train journey really gets me. I love the lyrics and the music.

        • John Prine was a great songwriter. Not everyone could listen to his voice and I understand 🙂 But good songs!

        • Ms. Swiss, I also love the lyrics and music of “The City of New Orleans”. It’s a memorable song. John Prine, as Marilyn said, is not exactly a household name for many. Ironically, he IS for those of us who follow folk music.
