FOWC with Fandango — Inherit
I can’t hear the word “Inherit” without thinking of “Inherit the Wind,” the Spencer Tracy – Frederic March classic. The movie, although historical, is not the “real” event. A lot of changes were made to give it the kind of tension a movie needs and which are often lacking in ‘real’ life.
Much of the language used in the movies was taken directly from the court’s transcripts. Despite this, there were also significant changes that are inevitable in making movies. It remains one of the great movies of our past and future. Definitely worth watching today — maybe even more than it was in 1960.
From “Inherit the Wind” 1960, Directed by Stanley Kramer, based on actual transcripts of the 1925 Scopes’ “Monkey Trial” in Tennessee, where the teaching of evolution had been banned. As far as I can tell, we are going back there again.

One of my favourite films.
When I was a lad I used to think ‘those were weird times, glad their over’
And now……
Is there going to be another trial like this in the next 10-20 years time?

Bizarre, isn’t it? I was pretty sure all these current issues were settled — years ago. But apparently, it’s never over. Ever. It rolls around again, less than a generation later. I don’t think i could cope with eternal life. I’d get disgusted with the reruns.

Sometimes, once in a while Life puts you in a position where you encounter someone who was involved in making a wrong choice (political I mean) and bewailing the fact and you can get to give them a sad and sympathetic smile and say, simply ‘Yeah’ ….You don’t crow and revel though, that would be ‘bad form’
They are rare, but they make it worth while….
It’s happened to me once….Ahhh to right once in a while

I was REALLY happy when Nixon resigned. Now, again, I wait for the moment. Oh just let me live long enough to see it!

Trump has not the dignity to realise when the game is up, he will have to be dragged kicking and screaming.
When it happens sit back and enjoy the show.

We can be sure he will kick and scream.

No dignity. No gravitas. Just a big freak of the voting system. Remind me again how many more folk voted for Clinton than Trump?

About 3 million I think.

Thought so. Had the situation been reversed the Unholy Church of Trump would still be howling about it and how Democracy had been ‘stolen’ or somethng similiar

Isn’t he howling that anyway?

It’s happening now. Between constant accusations of fake news and raids on journalists trying to do their job, I feel like I’m living in 1984.

And 1984 hit the bestseller list last year.

Tas, I had a speaking gig yesterday–a Mens Club. Mostly seniors — older than me. 150-200 in audience. I included comments about the media dealing with pols — back in my time and today. I conceded we had more freedom than today’s media. But that doesn’t absolve them of doing their job. Using their media bully pulpit to do the right thing.
After my gig, a number of people chatted me up, agreeing about my media comments and clarifying what it’s like to take on adversarial officials and their cronies. I think I erased some misconceptions about the media. A productive day, I think and hope.
Jon Stewart’s “shaming” of Congress regards the 9/11 survivors bill was absolutely awesome. Hope you’ve seen it.

I read about what Jon Stewart said, I think there is a clip floating about somewhere. I wanted to cheer for him for saying what he said.

Spencer Tracy does it so well.

Other than the one where he played a Greek fisherman, he did EVERYTHING well. He was one incredible actor.

Leslie, he certainly does. His style, unlike some others from old Hollywood, is never dated. It’s like another adage — “Never let them see you sweat”. In other words, you shouldn’t see them acting. Don’t chew the screen — Rod Steiger, Jack Nicholson, etc —good actors but you KNOW they’re strutting their stuff.

Those were some important movies too….

Leslie, yes. Tracy’s lead jurist in “Judgement at Nuremberg” offers another class in acting 101.

He was wonderful in that…

Leslie, yes he was. What a magnificent ensemble cast! Burt Lancaster was heartbreaking, Max Schell made you almost-almost believe his defense of the Nazi judges. The cameos by Montgomery Clift and Judy Garland are poignant and memorable. Ditto Marlene Dietrich as the Nazi General’s widow. What a powerhouse cast – topped by Tracy.

I hope it is screened in the schools. To easy to forget this terrible situation.

Sadly, it isn’t. A real pity because there are other great movies that make wonderful teaching vehicles, but they make school so boring instead.

Those movies are ideal for teaching.

Leslie, it SHOULD be screened in schools. Not sure if it is. Maybe, I’ll contact a few people to find out and suggest. Thank you.

That would be a good move Garry. There is so much learning potential that shouldn’t be wasted….

Leslie, never felt like he was acting. THAT’s the key to his greatness. He does some hem and haw-in, built in on purpose verbal stumbles. Jimmy Stewart, of course, did same schtick. Tracy and Stewart did one movie, “Malaya” /”Malaysia” (?)(MGM-’49) where both are stars and share scenes very nicely.

i have not had the chance to hear the movie clip, and while there is fanaticism everywhere, it’s a case of poor arguing in most cases, and not listening to what is said. i always think of the life of a butterfly, or the creation of a human life, to recognize that there is a hand in the background, I think those who teach the world of God, sometimes lose the message in their fanaticism, amen. thanks Marilyn,
