INHERIT THE WIND (1960) – Marilyn Armstrong

FOWC with Fandango — Inherit

I can’t hear the word “Inherit” without thinking of “Inherit the Wind,” the Spencer Tracy – Frederic March classic. The movie, although historical, is not the “real” event. A lot of changes were made to give it the kind of tension a movie needs and which are often lacking in ‘real’ life.

Much of the language used in the movies was taken directly from the court’s transcripts. Despite this, there were also significant changes that are inevitable in making movies. It remains one of the great movies of our past and future. Definitely worth watching today — maybe even more than it was in 1960.

From “Inherit the Wind” 1960, Directed by Stanley Kramer, based on actual transcripts of the 1925 Scopes’ “Monkey Trial” in Tennessee, where the teaching of evolution had been banned. As far as I can tell, we are going back there again.

  1. One of my favourite films.
When I was a lad I used to think ‘those were weird times, glad their over’
    And now……
Is there going to be another trial like this in the next 10-20 years time?

    • Bizarre, isn’t it? I was pretty sure all these current issues were settled — years ago. But apparently, it’s never over. Ever. It rolls around again, less than a generation later. I don’t think i could cope with eternal life. I’d get disgusted with the reruns.

  2. It’s happening now. Between constant accusations of fake news and raids on journalists trying to do their job, I feel like I’m living in 1984.

    • And 1984 hit the bestseller list last year.

    • Tas, I had a speaking gig yesterday–a Mens Club. Mostly seniors — older than me. 150-200 in audience. I included comments about the media dealing with pols — back in my time and today. I conceded we had more freedom than today’s media. But that doesn’t absolve them of doing their job. Using their media bully pulpit to do the right thing.
After my gig, a number of people chatted me up, agreeing about my media comments and clarifying what it’s like to take on adversarial officials and their cronies. I think I erased some misconceptions about the media. A productive day, I think and hope.
Jon Stewart’s “shaming” of Congress regards the 9/11 survivors bill was absolutely awesome. Hope you’ve seen it.

  6. i have not had the chance to hear the movie clip, and while there is fanaticism everywhere, it’s a case of poor arguing in most cases, and not listening to what is said. i always think of the life of a butterfly, or the creation of a human life, to recognize that there is a hand in the background, I think those who teach the world of God, sometimes lose the message in their fanaticism, amen. thanks Marilyn,
