Summer Sun
by Robert Louis Stevenson
Great is the sun, and wide he goes
Through empty heaven with repose;
And in the blue and glowing days
More thick than rain he showers his rays.
Though closer still the blinds we pull
To keep the shady parlour cool,
Yet he will find a chink or two
To slip his golden fingers through.
The dusty attic spider-clad
He, through the keyhole, maketh glad;
And through the broken edge of tiles
Into the laddered hay-loft smiles.
Meantime his golden face around
He bares to all the garden ground,
And sheds a warm and glittering look
Among the ivy’s inmost nook.
Above the hills, along the blue,
Round the bright air with footing true,
To please the child, to paint the rose,
The gardener of the World, he goes.
School starts next week, but this week, the weather is perfect. It’s still summertime as long as corn still grows in the fields nearby. Kids are taking their final swim in the pool before dad closes it up.

One … two … three … jump into the water as August draws to a close and school looms on next week’s horizon …
Bed in Summer
In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle-light.
In summer quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day.
I have to go to bed and see
The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people’s feet
Still going past me in the street.
And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day?

RLS is one of my very favorite poets and how grand it is to see him here! I had his Child’s Garden of Verses as a child and loved it so. Thank you for this sharing. With Love, Tasha

I have many of RLS’s poems memorized … from childhood. My mother used to read them to me and I love them dearly. “A Child’s Garden of Verse” is a wonderful book … I don’t know if it’s still fashionable, but I must have a dozen copies of it all around the house.

Summer’s end changes, I guess, as we grow older. It’s no longer the melodramatic curtain dropper on the vacations of our childhood with the new school year beckoning. Now, it’s a reminder that we have the joys of autumn and the unpredictable paybacks of winter awaiting us. I’ll keep wearing my shorts til my body says “uncle”.

Adn aren’t we glad that we all have central heating! I have lived in homes without it. I don’t think I could do it anymore.
