  2. Oh. How sad. And that’s road dust, I guess, not soot. (Dust here is red-brown.)
I’ll hold my breath till you tell the story of the Uxbridge-Mendon congregation.

Actually, I’m going to bed now. Best thing about retirement is keeping Musicians Hours or whatever you want to call it.
Love these “wee” hours. Not so much the “wee-wee” hours that interrupt them so ruthlessly. Goodnight, dear friend.

    • It probably IS soot. The Grafton-Upton railroad (about 15 miles of track maybe?) runs right in front of the church, literally.Maybe 50 fee? Or less? It’s the tracks I posted a couple of days ago and the railroad Owen road. I had to stand on the tracks to take the picture. Obviously they don’t throw soot anymore, but the train has been there almost as long as the church, so I’m sure that’s where the dirt and soot originated.

  3. Perfection! The soot from the lanterns (or whatever it is), perfect. As a U-U, I thank you. You have captured something about the U-U New England heritage that is touching indeed.

    • The UU (ex-UU, has been sold to someone … I hope they aren’t going to turn it into condos …. the fate of the UU church in Mendon. Mendon was the winter UU church — Uxbridge had no heat, so it was the summer church. They really all do look much the same, architecturally. I have an interesting story about the death of the Uxbridge-Mendon congregation and how we (Garry and I) could have saved it, but didn’t know until it was too late. That’s a story for another time. I do love those white simple clapboard churches,
