Everyone posts their best pictures, the lucky shots, the shots we got exactly right. But what about all those shots that don’t come out quite the way we hoped?
Selfies, or any self-portrait, is by definition more difficult to do than you think, especially when you try to take it using a real portrait lens in a mirror. The smaller field of view of the longer lens means it can be difficult to actually get your face in the picture. Decapitation is common, partial decapitation frequent. Bad exposure, unfortunate facial expressions. It’s fun to try. It’s even fun to look at the failures, of which there are far more than the successes. So here are a few of the ones that didn’t quite work out as hoped.

Funny! I always am disappointed with my selfies because what I see in the mirror doesn’t end up being captured by the lens. In the mirror my hair looks great, my make-up flawless, and my smile genuine. In the photo, I always seem to have captured how frizzy my hair is, that emerging pimple on my chin, and that weird not-quite-a-smile!

I retouch until what I see on the screen is reasonably close to what I “see” in the mirror. You know, the camera DOES lie. It exaggerates wrinkles and skin flaws, as well as frizziness and other stuff. Eyes don’t just see you as an object; they edit you into a person. Plus, your animation, humor, attitude … these are what people “see” and which YOU see too. So I use a soft focus, I use healing tools and while I don’t try to look like a kid, I don’t need to look like a hag, either.

I’m not a fan of selfies, but These look pretty fun.

Selfies are an interesting photo exercise. It’s hard to get good pictures … or even a complete picture. A mirror makes it more like real photography. Otherwise it’s just an exercise in having a very LONG arm.

I can imagine, It takes ages sometimes to get just what you want, when you realise you have something better. Sadly being a guy I feel they are also quite vain, but each to their own.

I’m too old to be vain. For me, it’s an exercise in seeing if I can actually make a reasonable portrait using these tools. I left vanity behind about a dozen years ago. What’s left is technique 🙂

I guess its an age thing too, looking at your technique, your doing really well and having fun at the same time.

I’m having a great time learning how to soften lines and wrinkles, and fade liver spots. If only I could use it on the live me. I don’t expect to be glamorous. But not “old Hag” would be okay 🙂

You’re a hoot. I love your pictures and that you shared them! I tried just holding the camera in front of my face at arms length and the result was a great up the nost shot. Maybe the mirror idea would work better.

Either way, it’s harder than you expect. The mirror is easier, I think, unless you have ultra long arms!

My favorite selfie is the one where you are smiling, getting ready to laugh. The one under it looks kind of like a pissed-off mugshot. I still say you are brave, brave, brave to turn the camera toward the mirror. Maybe one day I’ll stop taking myself so seriously and give in to the temptation. In the meantime, I’ll live vicariously through you. 😀

Probably if I didn’t look like the crone who distributes secret serums to the tribe, I’d like it better. I suppose I am her, really, but it’s still a shock when I see it 🙂 I was laughing because I kept taking pictures, but pieces of my head were missing. I though it was going to be a lot easier!

The pictures come out better when Garry or my friend Cherrie take them. It’s hard to smile when you are trying to figure out where to point the camera so that you’ll get your whole head and not just a section 🙂 That was what was making me laugh, the silliness of all the effort when I could really have just asked Garry to take a few shots of me.

Except that I look like a total hag 🙂 Maybe the tribe’s aging medicine woman?
