THE LAST STAND (2013) – BEST MOVIE EVER STARRING A FORMER GOVERNOR

Last_Stand_2013Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville, Rodrigo Santoro. Jaimie Alexander and lots of other people, this is absolutely the best movie ever made by a former governor of California. Or any former governor.

I’m not a very intellectual movie reviewer. That’s just as well, since there is nothing intellectual about this movie.

It’s pretty good. Lots of shooting. Blood spurting. Vicious bad guys. It has the grace to not take itself too seriously, with enough humorous moments and entirely predictable but nonetheless funny lines to make it easy to watch.

“I’m The Sheriff!” growls Arnold and by golly, he is, though Garry and I simultaneously pointed out that he used to be The Governor.

There are a lot of car chases … or maybe not really chases. More accurately, it is exceptionally good stunt driving. They actually did some stunts I’ve never seen before and I really thought I’d seen them all.

Plot? Oh, right. Plot. Okay. Think “High Noon” with a strong whiff of “Terminator.” Or any western movie where the sheriff stands up to some incredibly evil guys and whups their collective asses with the help of his faithful deputies and one old lady with a shot-gun. You’ll be glad to know that Arnold Schwarzenegger, senior citizen, ex-governor gets shot, stabbed and beat up, but walks away proudly in the end. Not into the sunset, but into the local diner. Irv’s Diner. Killing people and catching malevolent drug lords gives him an appetite. I’m just sorry I forgot to buy popcorn. It’s a beautiful, deeply touching, moment.

If you need a violence fix, this is a pretty good choice. It’s well made. Moves right along. Some great artillery and the aforementioned stunt driving.

It’s available on Amazon — free for Prime members. Probably on Netflix too. I haven’t checked but usually if it’s on one, you’ll find it on the other.

  1. I think I might actually like this one! 🙂

    • It was pretty good. Garry wants to watch it again. I loved the ending. I mean the guy has been shot, beaten and stabbed with a HUGE knife. He’s not even bleeding. After a bit of initial stiffness, he’s ready to rock and roll … and eat. My kind of senior citizen!

    • Yup. For those of us that like this kind of thing, it’s great. Loved the ending. Waiting for Last Stand 2 in which Arnold sues the Feds and forces them to rebuild the town! This time, a courtroom drama.

      • I absolutely loved this one!! Works for all the reasons given by Marilyn. Couldn’t be more satisfying than on an evening when some internal venting was needed. What’s really nice is Arnold’s work as an actor. More than just laughing at himself, he actually does a nice job as an aging lawman who’s seen too much violence and personal loss. This is on my “watch again” list.

  3. My eldest son urged me to see “Escape Plan” over the weekend, Arnie and Stalone, and even though I typically do not like this genre of movie, I stayed attentive and thought it was pretty good. Thanks for this “review”, I’m a Prime member at Amazon, I’m going to put this movie in my queue.

  4. I watched this movie a week or so ago and enjoyed it simply because it was classic Arnold. If you like shoot them up action flicks it’s great.

  5. This sounds just my kind of thing. Sometimes I’m just in the mood to sit down and watch an “Expendables” style film!

    • This is less funny than the Expendables but better in that it has a plot, not just shooting and one-liners. It’s a spaghetti Western with cars instead of horses. And a really high body count 😊

  6. It is rumored that Jerry Brown is taking acting lessons. Please always remember the best actor who was a governor who many say did his best acting job after he left the governorship of California, Ronald Reagan.

    • True. BUT … he never made another movie. To be fair, he was kind of old by the time he left office and probably incapable of memorizing his lines. One can but wonder who was giving him his lines in that last performance 😊

  7. Sorry. I’ll pass on this one.
