Split-Second Story
In this week’s photo challenge, capture an image that tells a full story in a single frame.
The music was playing. It was dark and bitterly cold. By the lights woven through the trees, one couple was dancing.

Gorgeous shot, Marilyn! I bet that couple would be in awe of your capture!

Pity I never found out who they were. I did a whole series of them … all came out nicely. Had the right lens on the camera for a change!

That (sometimes pricey) glass makes all the difference! Were you using a prime lens? Really beautiful light and sharp details!

A 20mm (40mm in 35mm terms) f1.7 Leica prime on an Olympus PEN PM2. Great little lens.

Yes, prime lenses are far superior with sharpness and light! Again, fantastic image! Really is a bummer the couple never saw them. Have a blessed day!

I have three primes. Superior glass at a lower price. Good glass in any kind of telephoto is usually out of my price range and the results I get with my primes are excellent. I have an Olympus f1.8 45mm (90 in 35mm) — the best portrait lens I’ve ever used and a 14mm f2.8 Leica/Panasonic which is a good general purpose walking around lens. For everything else, I have a little Panasonic/Leica superzoom compact that I keep in my purse. I have a 40-150 tele for the 4/3 Olympuses as well as the “normal” 14-42 zoom, but I rarely use them. Not bad lenses (kind of slow) … easier to use the compact with the 24-600mm Leica lens for pix of ducks and geese on the other side of the pond 🙂

Beautiful shots and lovely night. But so damn cold!!

I was VERY cold. Which made them all the more remarkable. I could barely stay outside long enough to get the camera focused.

Stunning picture, the image lights set amongst the black somehow suggest the detail of cold. Clever image.

This shot reminds me of our honeymoon many years ago. We were in Portland, OR. It was nighttime, and we danced in a place similar to this. A lovely photo. Thanks for the memory.

Thank you 🙂 Shots like this always depend on being in the right place, at the right time, with a camera and the right lens. I got lucky.

For this kind of photography, luck is a huge factor. The other part is having the camera ready so you can take advantage of the moment.

I carry a compact P&S in my bag all the time, but it still takes time to get it out and point it. In this particular case, I was photographing the lights — it was an event. I had the right camera and lens in my hand. That’s luck 🙂

It was lovely but very cold. And there they were, dancing. Everyone else was hustling to find someplace warm but they were dancing. I stopped to take a few pictures, then we too hustled into the warm building 🙂
