And down the mountain we drove. Around 85 miles down, same mileage back. We met Bette Stevens, of 4 Writers and Readers. She’s in the middle of a round of editing her next book, but she took the time to spend the afternoon with me and Garry.

A great lunch and Ken’s Family Restaurant, a trip to the Magaret Chase Smith Library, and a brief sojourn to see the world’s tallest Indian (statue), created by Bernard Langlais (1921-1977), a sculptor from Old Town who attended the local art school.

We had great conversation at lunch, then spent some time taking picture of each other, visiting the library and admiring the statue, which is oddly located next to a Cumberland Farms.

We know each other on the Internet, yet there’s always some nervousness when finally, we meet in person. Will we really like one another?

No problem. It was love at first sight. I think we are officially best-friends-forever. I don’t know when we will be back this way, but I’m sure we will come again. Maybe next year or the year after that. But we will come back. How could we not return to so much natural beauty and great people?

This is a really nice post. What’s best that having lunch with friends or new friends? Plus in such a gorgeous setting? Enjoy every minute of your stay up there. Great photos of all of you. The sweatshirts are cool.

Tomorrow, we will head to Vermont to visit friends in Peachem. Extending our vacation a little bit. Longer is definitely better. I’m not ready to be back into the maelstrom quite yet.

I talked to the well guys yesterday — apparently so did my son because he alluded to this being the second call in a very short time. He said there’s queue and I’m on it. Drilling is an art, not a science and some people have no water at all. They get the work done first. Heaving great sigh. I had so hoped it would all be over when I got back. Guess not. Meanwhile, I’m showing up a storm.
That was one very large statue in a very weird location.

You and Bette look like you’ve known each other for years and years…and maybe even related… perhaps in a prior life? And the pic of you and Mr. A is priceless… ’tis good to see smiles on those faces, and even laughter. Going on a walkabout appears to suit ya.
On a different note… gotta love sumac in the fall. One of my favorites. I have a creeping sumac by the house, stays fairly low, is fragrant, and turns the most g.l.o.r.i.o.u.s. shades of orange in the fall. Hate cold, but love, love, love the colors and crispness of fall.

We felt like we’d known each other for years. A nice feeling. We get to be friends on the Internet but I think there’s always a doubt whether this will translate to the “real world.” It translate! Big time!!

It was a marvelous afternoon. Truth be told, I’m always nervous about meeting new people. Unless I’m in my TV news guy personna, I’m shy. Always been that way. Bette is a such a friendly and warm person, making me relax instantly. It was great for Marilyn to have someone other than me for conversation. Read EVERYTHING between that line! Here’s hoping we do it again and hire Robby the Robot to drive.
