BARNS, MILLS, AND EMPTY FACTORIES

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge:

Abandoned Buildings or Barns

The Blackstone Valley is the perfect place for this challenge. Abandoned mills and factories, old barns ranging from total wrecks to beautifully restored. It sort of describes the area, a summary of our history.

    • This valley is where American industry was born and all the mills and factories have the same history. Most were built in between 1795 and 1900, the majority in the early to mid 1800s, a few as late as the 1900s. In the 1920s and 1930s, mill owners decided they’d make more of a profit by moving the mills down south where the cotton actually grew and where labor was cheap. And where local government was more amenable to giving them tax breaks. They stayed there, providing a huge amount of employment in the south until the 1980s when our stupid lawmakers made it more profitable to ship the mills overseas and give all those jobs to people in places like India where labor is very cheap (and they grow cotton) and they don’t have to pay taxes. Thank the fools that make our laws for killing an entire industry and leaving two regions without work.
