I love our annual excursion to the Boston Pops Christmas concert. I love the music. I love symphony hall. I love the area, the architecture, the happy crowd … and that we always seem to get a great parking space. I take the parking space as a sign that the gods favor us. Next … a lottery win!
The other big reason I love that excursion is my annual opportunity to shoot at night in Boston. I can shoot night scenes around here any day of the year, but our town isn’t exactly Metropolis. Urban landscape requires an urban setting.
We always do these excursions in a family group … and I am always the only one who brings a camera. This time I just kept the tickets in my bag and told everyone when I was through taking pictures, they would get tickets … and not a moment sooner. That slowed them down!
After the show, I took a few more, but they decided to not leave me behind there on the streets of Boston, even though I couldn’t threaten them with tickets. Nice of them, don’t you think?

Great photos. I am always embarrassing my children by taking photos of the most mundane things. They wander off in the distance and don’t want to know me. Clever of you to hold the tickets so they have to wait for you. Hope you enjoyed the concert. 😀

Thanks! I was pretty sure if they had the tickets, they’d just go in and leave me out on the street. My granddaughter is quite a skilled photographer herself and should know better, but she had her boyfriend with her, which addles her brain 🙂

Boston is a very twinkly city. Perhaps most cities are, at least American cities. Jerusalem was dark at night, not a twinkle in sight, but Bethlehem twinkled 🙂

I enjoyed these very much. I hope sometimes this winter to get to Denver — I haven’t been there since 1999 and I know the city has changed. I loved it so much when I was young, I want to see if there’s anything left to love. I also hope to go to a concert. I might splurge and FLY up there, spend a day and a night and fly back. The drive is 4+ hours and Denver has grown faster than it’s been able to adjust its freeways. What did you hear?

It was the Christmas concert, so it was more or less what you’d expect. Hallelujah Chorus, of course. Carols, but almost no traditional Christian carols — mostly pop songs like “White Christmas.” Less Christian, more secular. A lot of stuff about World War I, I assume because this is the 100th anniversary of the war and we are coming up to the anniversary of the “Christmas Truce” of 1914. Orchestral music tribute to John Williams, composer and previous conductor of the BSO. Their usual rousing version of “Sleigh Bells” and “12 Days of Christmas.” We get free tickets from a friend, otherwise we couldn’t even THINK about going.

It IS lovely, but the drive seems longer every year. Boston is 70 miles away and it didn’t seem like such a big distance 10 years ago. Time has marched on.

I especially enjoy the Christmas concert because of the traditional music. The Boston Pops, conducted and “steered” by Keith Lockhart, always bring a freshness to the old favorites. Their “Twelve Days of Christmas” is always a highlight. It’s filled with visual as well as musical diversions. Lockhart has an impish sense of humor which allows you to have fun as well as appreciate the music. The legendary Arthur Fiedler set this tone with the Pops when he wasn’t chasing fire engines. Fiedler was a delightful fella! We’re very grateful to our friend who enables us to enjoy the holiday concert — every year — in our fixed income lives.
