I grew up with the Lone Ranger and Tonto racing around my bedroom. Until I got the wallpaper, I was sure he was the Long Ranger … as in “he rode a lot and covered great distances.”

The original Lone Ranger and Tonto — Jay Silverheels and Clayton Moore

Other girls had Disney Princesses, but I had “Hi Yo Silver, the Lone Ranger Rides Again!” Although my walls did not play music, I could hum well enough and I had many a long chat with Lone and Tonto, Silver and Scout as I lay abed in the evening pondering the meaning of life and how I could convince my mother to let me have a horse.

Eventually, as I rounded the corner into adolescence, the Lone Ranger and his trusty Indian Companion (who had led the fight for law and order in the early west) returned to those thrilling days of yesteryear whence they had come. They were replaced by plain, off-white paint. I would have preferred to keep Lone and Tonto, but the paper was old and tattered. It was time for me to move on.

This did not end my allegiance to this great first love of my young life. I don’t know what it is about masked men on horses, but Zorro and Lone made me woozy with unrequited love. As the years rolled on, I became very attached to Tonto — not as Tonto the character, but as Jay Silverheels, the actor– whose career I followed long after the Lone Ranger had ridden into the sunset.

NOTE: Tonto isn’t a Mexican and didn’t speak Spanish. Tonto, according to Native American sources, was a Potawatomi word meaning “wild one.” Although it is also Spanish for “fool”, that was not the intention.

The Lone Ranger and Tonto fought the good fight. They never asked for thanks and would ride away rather than deal with gratitude. They were the best of the good guys. Whenever I’m not sure what choice to make in a morally ambiguous situation, I can always ask myself “What would the Lone Ranger do?” I know the answer could only be right.

  1. OMG! I haven’t thought of my childhood wallpaper in years … it was cowboys and Indians riding horses and cattle with a chuck wagon. I remember getting spanked (those were the good ole days), because I took my mother’s pancake makeup and colored in the faces on the wallpaper.

  2. I could see three similar looking posts in the related posts column, can make out how many times they must have repeated the prompt. It certainly has updated my knowledge on Lone ranger and Tonto 🙂

  3. And I still wonder why he his his face under a mask. Do you think he had something to hide? Perhaps he was an extra terrestrial and had … oh I don’t know. Am tired, just cooked big meal for everyone. Something tells me we have had this prompt a few thousand times before. Happy hanukah, christmas, Eid, Diwali or whatever and don’t fall asleep in front of the the TV.

    • Yes, we’ve had this prompt at least 3 times that I can remember … so I republished the post I gave as the answer the last two times. I didn’t even change the picture. I baked the pies. They are cooling. Dinner doesn’t go in for another hour. The table is almost set. I already went shopping, washed floors, watered plants. I have to change the sofa covers. I’m already tired and ready for my nap! For people who don’t celebrate holidays, we seem to be awfully busy, don’t you think?

He wore a mask for symbolic reasons after his entire group of other rangers were murdered. It’s one of those things that we fans know 🙂

  4. We actually did see it a few months ago at a friend’s house. It turned out to be a lot better than I expected. Certainly a lot funnier. And the star was clearly Silver. My love of the REAL Lone Ranger is intact. Johnny Depp can’t take that away from me. Garry and I had pointedly avoided it but finally, it came down to insulting our host or watching the movie. We watched the movie.

  5. Me too. And in addition to the Lone Ranger and Zorro stories, the Scarlet Pimpernel and Batman stories.

    • Yes. Them too. For me, also Superman — though everyone recognizes me with or without my eyeglasses — and Wonder Woman, even though her passion for dopey Steve has always baffled me.

    • Luanne, have you watched the “Gotham” TV series on Fox? It’s a prequel thing focusing on a young Bruce Wayne. James Gordon is the pivotal figure as the good guy cop on the sleazy Gotham Police Dept. It also gives us back stories on the Penguin (quite funny here), a street wise girl who will grow up to be Catwoman and other familiar characters. I’m enjoying it.

  6. My Xmas gift from WordPress is that once again they won’t accept my pingbacks, so may I post my posting link here? Merry Xmas. Enjoyed your post1

  7. The other day I watched the remake of The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp in the role of Tonto on TV. I would recommend that, unless you want to shatter your childhood adoration for those two heroes, you should avoid seeing that remake. It was campy, in a way, but awful as well.
