MYTH AND MAGIC

Last night, I explained to Garry about house elves. He isn’t a big reader of fantasy, as I am, so some of this stuff hasn’t gnawed at the edges of his consciousness.

I told him if we were to leave milk and cookies out, the little folk would come to our house. Overnight, while we sleep, they would clean, scrub, repair, and cook. Fix the roof. Clear the snow. When we got up the next morning, the coffee would be ready along with delicious, fresh baked goods.

He looked at me. I think he wasn’t sure if he had heard me. “Is this like, real, anywhere? Has this actually happened somewhere?”

“No,” I said. “Only in folk tales and myth. And Harry Potter. But wouldn’t it be nice if it were true? We could leave out milk, cookies, and an old pair of socks. Just in case.”

One eyebrow went up. “And something that already lives here would surely eat it. And Bonnie would abscond with the socks. Our kids would be sure to leave us something. Probably not fresh baked goods … or a clean house.”

Just for a second or two, I had him. Myth and magic live. So much better than reality, aren’t they?

  4. Lyin’ Brian Williams, Bill ‘Falklands’ O’Reilly; myth, reality, it’s all the same.

    • Reality has become very soft at the edge. Sometimes downright squishy in the middle, too. I don’t even understand some of it. Brian Williams didn’t have any reason to lie. None. It was not going to do him any good and it could do him serious harm. He was already at the top of the heap … so why? Why do it? Bill Reilly is a jerk and I would not expect better from him, but Brian Williams is a mystery. Maybe HE isn’t sure what is real and what is not.

    • Back, back, back, WAY back in my college radio days, I used to do a show called, “The Myth & The Music”. We combined folk music with mythical stories. Speed warp ahead to my career in TV News. Maybe Brian Williams is still doing his college show on a bigger stage.

  5. Lord of the rings is my all time favourite and I used to love those Enid Blytons with elves and the faraway tree:)

  6. You don’t see them, right? Because I wouldn’t want to run into that creepy elf in the middle of the night.

  7. I am not sure about that one, although I always have a bowl of fresh water outside during night in case Tabby gets thirsty. I stopped putting food out, it was disappearing too quickly and there were strange oversize footprints in the garden – did we have a Jabberwock somewhere? Mr. Swiss is mostly up before me, not always, but he is bored, so he might fold the wash and he definitely switches on his computer.

    • I think Garry really liked the “fresh baked goods” idea. Something smelling warmly of vanilla to go with the coffee. Everything clean and tidy did it for me. Sigh. Sometimes the line between wishful thinking and magic gets so very blurry.

  8. I would like to have the powers of Samantha Stephens. Better yet, I would like to have the powers of her parents, Maurice and Esmeralda.

    • Wouldn’t we all? When I was a kid, we all devoutly hoped somehow, we could just wiggle something and everything would get done, cleaned, fixed. Homework, housework, maintenance. Done with a cute little wiggle.

Myth. To which reality loses ever time.
