A Photo a Week Challenge: Siblings
This is my favorite photograph of Garry and his baby brother Anton.
Anton Armstrong is a well-known and highly respected conductor, a celebrity in his own right. In this picture, he was a guest at Garry’s induction into the Massachusetts Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
It was a big deal for Garry, made bigger because Anton was there.

Very nice photo Marilyn. Sweet they have each other!

I wish they had more opportunities to see each other. Between Anton’s schedule and the distance, it’s hard to find a way, but they still manage.

It is, but travel is increasingly hard for us. And Anton is incredibly busy. We mostly see him when he has a concert in the area. Fortunately, that has been pretty much every year … and he has a seminar coming up next month (I think), so we’ll get to see him again for a couple of hours. He is a real road warrior. I don’t know how Anton survives his schedule.

It is nice to see brothers that are close like that . You can see the affection and mutual respect. My two sons are something like that too.

It’s a special bond, this bond between brothers, (and sisters too).

Garry and his two brothers have remained very close throughout the years. I wish my own brother had lived a few more years.

Then there is the other kind, like my brother.., not particularly nice, or close, to anyone in his family. I think he sorta liked me, but I can’t be sure. BTW, I liked your brother, Matt.., a pretty nice guy.

Matt was a diamond. I miss him. Most of my family … well, I don’t even know most of the younger generations. And my generation, there aren’t many left . None in my mother’s generation anymore.

I know what it feels like to be the “end of the line”.., But then there’s Owen to carry on…

I even have a granddaughter who appears likely to carry on. But that doesn’t give us people to hang out with on a summer (or winter) evening … and I miss that. A lot.

I have an older brother and we are pretty close.

I never knew that Anton was Garry’s brother until a couple of years ago.., and being in the concert recording world I got to meet him on tour with The St. Olaf Choir. A very gentle man.., not unlike his brother Garry, whom I’ve grown to like a lot these last few years.

Anton is a tougher nut than Garry in a lot of ways. Garry has a shorter fuse, but Anton is very Alpha. Without getting all Astrological on you, Garry’s an Aries and Anton’s a Taurus … the ram and the bull. They are very different, yet upbringing does show, I guess. At least in their manners. That’s a lot of celebrity for a nice West Hempstead family. None of that in MY family 🙂

My sister is a Doctor…, does that count???

I am still bowled over that Anton, recuperating from that surgery and on a very tight schedule, made it to the Hall of Fame induction ceremony. I think I’ll always be emotionally speechless by his appearance that day. It truly MADE my day.

I know. It made mine because he made yours 🙂

I read your brother-in-law’s bio on the St. Olaf’s website. Amazing! St. Olaf has an outstanding reputation for music. I studied music in college, and the conductor of the choir I was in always talked about connecting with the music and each other like the choirs at St. Olaf’s.

Anton’s a big deal in choral music. I was a music major too, but Anton was still a kid back then 🙂 Garry is incredibly proud of his brother. It’s mutual! He sang at our wedding. We had to schedule our wedding around Anton’s schedule, but it was worth it.

It was nice to discover he hasn’t been forgotten. I’m always surprised at how often people still recognize him … and weirder still, how many people think he’s still working. He’s been retired since 2001, so you have to wonder 🙂
