You, over in the corner. Yes, you. Are you talking about me?

Overhearing whispered conversations about you while you are in the hospital? Then wondering what they meant by it?

Why do hospital personnel persist in talking about patients while they are in the same room, assuming we are so far “out of it” we can’t hear them?

insane doctor cartoon

I’ve discovered even when I’m supposed to be sleeping, unconscious, or loopy on drugs, I hear most of what goes on.

Usually I keep “sleeping” because I really don’t want to be bothered. I’m tired. Plus, I hope someone will say something important or at least interesting. A little bit of juicy gossip about the doctor is always food for thought.

So far, it  hasn’t happened. But it could.

  1. Marilyn,
I usually hear most of what is said when I am in the hospital as well.
You would think hospital staff would know better that to be so careless about what they say.

  2. Good cartoon! Chuckle. Sometimes they don’t even pretend to whisper they just talk in front of you as if you weren’t there.

  3. Years ago, I broke a finger playing softball – totally destroyed the middle joint of that finger. X-rays were taken, and I heard the tech in the viewing room exclaim, “Whoa, that’s a good one!” But of course, when she came back to where I was and I asked her what the x-ray showed, she would only say that my doctor would discuss that with me. Well, at least I was somewhat prepared for the bad news when it came.

  4. People are so confident about what they presume. And they presume the other person is deaf. It is as same as ignoring my presence in staff room when three teachers sit, eat and gossip together pretending on other side of table I will not hear their cribbing. huh

  5. It does not happen so much in Switzerland. you are treated as a normal intelligent human species and it is now fashion to tell you all about it down to the last unwanted gory detail. Sometimes perhaps it is better not to know. On the other hand if you are in an english hospital, you have no idea what is going on. You are judged as idiot No. 1 and nothing is explained. You don’t even get to see the toilet, it is all done by bed pan.

    • American hospitals — the good ones — are about halfway between Swiss and English. It depends on who you are dealing with. Some of the staff are really great about explaining what’s going on, the other thinks you are a moron … or more likely, don’t want to be bothered actually talking to you. Takes too much time, you know?

My favorite recent “moment” was last year, in the ICCU, having the nurse explain how I had to not use the hand shower because it makes a mess. I said ” I have a hand shower at home and I know how to close a shower curtain.” She seemed baffled that anyone as old and feeble as me could have a grip on something as complex as taking a shower without flooding the bathroom. She was very young. I hope she remembers the moment for when she isn’t so young.
