There’s a long, interesting history of “Summertime” and its historic relationship to Fenway Park and the Boston Red Sox. Possibly the oldest tradition in baseball!
Sherm Feller, who wrote Summertime, Summertime was an old pal of Garry’s as well as the public address announcer at Fenway Park for many years. He was known for playing the song regularly over the speakers at the park.

Summertime, Summertime Lyrics
It’s summertime summertime sum sum summertime
Summertime summertime sum sum summertime
Summertime summertime sum sum summertime
Summertime summertime sum sum summertime summertime…
Well shut them books and throw em away
Say goodbye to dull school days
So come on and change your ways
It’s summertime…
Well no more studying history
And no more reading geography
And no more dull geometry
Because it’s summertime
It’s time to head straight for them hills
It’s time to live and have some thrills
Come along and have a ball
A regular free-for-all
Well are you comin or are you ain’t
You slow-pokes are my one complaint
Hurry up before I faint
It’s summertime
Well I’m so happy that I could flip
Oh how I’d love to take a trip
I’m sorry teacher but zip your lip
Because it’s summertime
It’s time to head straight for them hills
It’s time to live and have some thrills
Come along and have a ball
A regular free for all
Well we’ll go swimmin every day
No time to work just time to play
If your folks complain just say,
It’s summertime
And every night we’ll have a dance
Cause what’s a vacation without romance
Oh man this jive has me in a trance
Because it’s summertime
It’s time to head straight for them hills
It’s time to live and have some thrills
Come along and have a ball A regular free for all
It’s summertime
It’s summertime summertime sum sum summertime
Summertime summertime sum sum summertime
Summertime summertime sum sum summertime
Summertime summertime sum sum summertime
Summertime
It’s summertime!

I remember that song. Is there one for the winter time – other than winter wonderland and Christmas? Nope. Anyway that is a great song.

The closest might be “Let It Snow.” Otherwise there’s nothing like this that isn’t a Christmas song. This one is unique.

It is summertime summertime sum sum summertime. I never thought summers would arrive so soon in your country. Few weeks back you had shared such amazing pics of snow, winters and autumn. Slowly the sun shone and the snow was gone. Fuchsias bloomed and now summers…. What a journey !

The seasons move fast here. Literally, winter one day, summer 48 hours later. Something about the latitude and the winds. The minute the winds stop blowing down from the arctic and start blowing up from the south or in from the west, the weather changes completely. You can smell the difference too. The wind tastes different, the sun is a different color in each season. When I lived in Israel, I missed the seasons a lot. When you grow up in this part of the world, the seasons are embedded in your psyche. They are the rhythm of the earth. Each month has its special colors, smells, and light.
That being said, I wouldn’t mind one bit if winter were shorter and all the other seasons longer. Especially autumn. I could do with a LOT more autumn!

And your part of the world looks so decked up with colors and maple leaves in autumn.

The colder the climate and the shorter summer is, the more nature seems to make up for it by putting out a huge burst of color. I’m told that Alaska is even more like that.

Its a running joke in our house, we can’t remember what we did yesterday, but we can remember the lyrics to all the old songs.

If I could set my shopping lists to music, I bet I would remember them forever! That’s still how I can remember the alphabet. Learned the alphabet ditty in Kindergarten and I still have to sing it to myself to remember the order of the letters.

We had friend over and my husband put a soundtrack CD on form a movie called “Blood ties”. First song came on “New York Groove” and most of us were wiggling our feet. Next song “Sugar Baby love” and by the middle of the song most of us were singing (too high and too wrong) but it was so comical. I laughed so hard. All of us could remember those silly lyrics.

The sillier the lyrics, the easier they are to remember. And if it makes you laugh, then it’s good, right?

Ladybug, I have 2 cd mix albums, cut by Marilyn and an old deejay pal. On my last long solo drive in my sporty yella car with sunroof, I was singing merrily (and loud) everything from “El Paso” to “Day The Music Died”. So much fun!
As for “Sum..sum Summertime”, Sherm Feller, if you can imagine, was the real life version of Strother Martin, L.Q. Jones and Fred Willard — combined. He was THE legendary Fenway Park “stadium” announcer who, between libations, told me ribald stories about my baseball heroes and – without missing a beat — continued with his game duties. He was an amazing guy.

I have no idea what you are talking about, but I assume it has something to do with your favorite sport baseball. I am a baseball dummy, never understood the rules. Love icehockey and soccer and if you ever want to see/hear me on my worst behavior….that would be it :-). My husband sings all the time, loud especially in the car. He loves it and he can’t sing…it must be a man-thing we don’t understand.

Was that really 1958? Sounds kind of funny now.

I was 11. Long time ago. But the song has hung around and is still sung because there’s no song that says “Summer” like that one 🙂
