FIRST AND FREE: A PHOTO A WEEK – CIVIC BUILDINGS

A Photo a Week: Civic Buildings

When you live in a small town, your “civic buildings” are appropriately sized which is to say, small.

This is our library. Built in 1889. It’s small. Too small, really. Bursting at the seams, but the town has not been able to fund its expansion. It is a beautiful building and was the first free library in Massachusetts. That is big!

  2. Lovely building. I’m guessing all those voters reading their ebooks aren’t much interested in being taxed to build a new library to house books they don’t check out. After downsizing, I have no interest in accumulating books so I know our local librarians by name. I sincerely appreciate the library system and would definitely vote ‘yes’ for a larger library. 🙂

    • It IS a poor area, but it would be a lot poorer without a library. We voted FOR a raise in the library budget, but apparently we were among the few. But to be fair, no one voted for the new high school either. It’s just that we had no choice about the high school. They were going to remove the high school’s accreditation if they didn’t build a new one. Which is why our taxes when up by 1200/year. The library would have cost us 37 cents.
