A Photo a Week: Civic Buildings
When you live in a small town, your “civic buildings” are appropriately sized which is to say, small.
This is our library. Built in 1889. It’s small. Too small, really. Bursting at the seams, but the town has not been able to fund its expansion. It is a beautiful building and was the first free library in Massachusetts. That is big!

It is beautiful inside, too. Just … too small.

They had a way of finishing and detailing that has been lost today.

Elegance wasn’t an extra addition. It was part of the original design. It is an elegant building. I’ll have to see if they will let me take some pix inside. It’s beautiful. Cluttered, but beautiful.

Lovely building. I’m guessing all those voters reading their ebooks aren’t much interested in being taxed to build a new library to house books they don’t check out. After downsizing, I have no interest in accumulating books so I know our local librarians by name. I sincerely appreciate the library system and would definitely vote ‘yes’ for a larger library. 🙂

It IS a poor area, but it would be a lot poorer without a library. We voted FOR a raise in the library budget, but apparently we were among the few. But to be fair, no one voted for the new high school either. It’s just that we had no choice about the high school. They were going to remove the high school’s accreditation if they didn’t build a new one. Which is why our taxes when up by 1200/year. The library would have cost us 37 cents.

Yes, it’s a treasure which the town does not appreciate.

That is sad. I think we have had a lot of similar cases in our city, it’s sad if culture is not appreciated, and when there is no new money for things. I like old buildings.

They not only don’t appreciate the architecture, they don’t value the library.

They don’t care about the library, neither the beautiful old building or the historic importance of the state’s first free library. They think libraries are outdated. But they aren’t. It is sad.

We’ll be lucky if they don’t bulldoze it in favor of a new grocery store.
