For those of you who think Norman Rockwell only painted idealized images, he didn’t. His idealized images are the most popular, but he painted many other, hard-edged pictures. If you’re in the neighborhood of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, I recommend the Norman Rockwell Museum.
Thanksgiving — our version of it — is a particularly American experience. I especially love this Thanksgiving cover for Life Magazine — reminding us that the Pilgrims were a humorless bunch. Not the kind of people I’d like to know.
They wouldn’t approve of our traditional Thanksgiving, not one little bit. I don’t think you’d want them at your table and they would not be thrilled to be there, either.
I enjoy Thanksgiving. The idea of it. It’s good there’s a day dedicated to gratitude. And eating too much, visiting with family and friends. But — you knew there was going to be a “but” didn’t you? — I am frequently reminded there are people who don’t have a family. Others who don’t have much to celebrate. And of course Native Americans, who on the whole, don’t find Thanksgiving a reason to rejoice.
So, while we are consuming our dinners and enjoying our family, please give a thought to those who aren’t celebrating. Can’t celebrate. Are disinclined to celebrate. We do not all have to celebrate the same way.
Enjoy your holiday. Your way.

There are no Hallmark families so the build up to this day is one that almost no one can live up to. But, here’s hoping each person and family can focus on those things they are thankful for and enjoy a meal together whether that’s a turkey and the trimmings or a frozen pizza. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

We always have a pretty easy time with the holiday. No big blowups. We don’t get into big controversial stuff at dinner and we don’t turn it into the event to end all events. I think not overselling it helps.

Happy Thanksgiving from Friday. We don’t do this here in New Zealand but watch from afar on the news – such as it is here Macy’s Thanksgiving parade which is on as I write. I love Norman Rockwell and yes, some of his work gave us food for thought.

The Puritans left England because they didn’t like how the government/church operated. What did they do when they got over here? They established a government/church.

Yeah. They weren’t a really nice bunch of folks. Actually, thoroughly unpleasant.

You never know… even the Puritans might not have been able to resist a good Black Friday sale. There’d be breeches torn and habits flying, and plenty of reasons afterwards to break out the stocks. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Garry!

And to you too! The house is clean, more or less. The pies are baked. The kids are cooking. I shall watch the parade in NY. And the dog show that follows. My idea of a high old time 😂😂
