I’ve always loved taking pictures of gates and fences. There are so many different shapes and materials. Some are merely decorative while other are formidable, intended to keep the world away.
This week, Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge (CB&W) topic is all about Fences and Gates, as simple as a barbed wire fence to a fence that forms a fortress.
Most of our local fences are simple. Wood and wire or just wood. To keep the cows in the pasture, keep the horses in the corral.
Thanks Cee for another excellent challenge!

Thank you so much Cee! I’ve been very uninspired lately. We went out shooting yesterday … and the road to the park where we shoot was closed. They are finally repairing (replacing, it would seem) that dangerous little bridge over the Blackstone. So this gave me a nice push to go out there and get some new material. You are a fabulous hostess 🙂

I think it is a restored Victorian farmhouse in a VERY expensive estate area. It’s huge and magnificent. Whoever restored it spent more money on it than everything I own is worth all put together. It’s some house.

Lovely photos, Marilyn. The fences define a territory and the gates let you in. They work well in black and white.

Thanks, Leslie. Anything which is mostly structure and has some contrast will normally work in black and white. You do need contrast, though. Without it, black & white goes kind of grey.

Thanks. I love fences and I shoot them also. I notice that so do you. They are interesting to shoot, especially when you’ve got bright light and a good angle to work from. And unlike wildlife, they don’t keep MOVING.

Black and white remains my kind of photos. Really perfect for fences.

Thank you 🙂 Fences and gates are indeed natural subjects for black and white. There’s something about them. I often shoot them with conversion to black & white in mind.

Thanks. New England is very big on fences, especially stone fences. That’s what we do with all the rocks we have to haul out of the fields before anyone can plant a crop!
