SPEAKING OF SPEAKING OUT …

DISCOVER CHALLENGE | SPEAK OUT!

As Garry was switching channels, he paused briefly on the news. “Senators protested the president’s …” and then he clicked on through. No need to listen. Something awful was going on, but these days, something awful is always going on. It is less than two weeks since Number 45 took office. Doesn’t it feel like so much longer than that? It is hard to imagine what we will be experiencing three hundred days from now.

I am not sure we will still have a country, or if the world will exist. We are living not merely in interesting times. We are living an absurd, surrealistic nightmare from which we cannot awaken.

I have been having nightmares. Not the wake up screaming kind, but the anxious kind where I’m looking for something, but cannot find it. I forget the details of the dreams after I’ve up, but I remember the seeking, searching, not finding, looking further … until finally I give up on sleep. It is not restful. I am having a national nightmare in my personal dreams.

I hope things settle down, at least a bit. I don’t think I’ll survive four years without a full night’s sleep.

So, speaking of speaking out, that’s what I’ve been doing. I’m a bit low on righteous indignation today, but I should be ready to rock n’ roll by tomorrow. I’ve been so pissed off at having a president who I think is 1) a sociopath, 2) demented (as in suffering from dementia), or 3) the anti-Christ. Alternatively, Lex Luthor, wearing an orange wig.

What’s left to say?

That this is a guy who has never read a book? Can’t write anything longer than a tweet? Has no sense of fairness, or honor? Cares about nothing except himself and (maybe) his own? Who is willing to do anything to get his own way, no matter who or what is destroyed in the process?

I’ve said it before, echoing and being echoed by many others.

I’m embarrassed that my country voted in this bloated tick to be president. I’m ashamed of my countrymen. I never imagined I could feel this way. I have not always been entirely happy with how, as a nation, we have behaved. I hated the war in Vietnam, appalled at how we treat Native Americans and people of color. Yet, I always believed we had our heart in the right place. That we were a nation with a moral compass that holds a fundamental belief in doing the right thing. Even though it takes us a long time to figure out exactly what “the right thing” is, I always thought we were going in the right direction, if slowly.

Now? We have lost our way. Our moral compass is kaput. We stand humiliated in front of the world. And we aren’t even two weeks into this administration. What new horrors will be perpetrated before his term of office is finally over?

Moving to the ridiculous (or is it?), check this out. I am not the only one who thinks maybe DJT is really Lex Luthor with a rug.

  1. Hi Marilyn. Great post as usual. You are right. We have elected a sociopath. There will always be mayhem around a sociopath. They get a crude sense of entertainment from everyone being consumed by them. It’s called narcissistic supply. I am as appalled by all of these dynamics as well, but must remind myself, as I will you and your followers as well,.. get some sleep. Sociopaths bask in your consumption of their drama. Trump is now consuming countries with his drama. Get some sleep. Rest well and take back your presence. Keep speaking out, and get others to fight back at the polls. It’s not worth sacrificing your health because you can’t make yourself sick enough to fix the Trump problem (to paraphrase the great Wayne Dyer, RIP). For any of your followers’ desire to read more about sociopaths, I will leave a link to my blog again. https://twoifbycharmwordpress.wordpress.com/ Thanks again Marilyn. You are a great voice. Get some sleep.

    • Thanks. My husband keeps us in check. At a certain point, he turns OFF the news and that’s it. He worked too many years in news to be suckered by this. And yes, we know it’s going to be a long four years.

  2. Reblogged this on Espiritu en Fuego/A Fiery Spirit and commented:
I too am afraid and have had some sleepless nights. I’m in constant prayer for my Muslim friends and co-workers. It’s like we are in a Horror movie Twilight Zone.

  3. Such a longing for peace and hope – hard to give ourselves rest when we don’t know what’s going to unfold. Your post captured the sense of the impact for many and the new challenge we have for nurturing our own peace and wellbeing so that we give our support when and where we see it will help

    • It’s going to be hard road. It sits in the back of your brain, ready to pop out the moment you are idle. I haven’t found a balance point yet. I’m going to have to, but I’m not sure how. The horror of the situation … I have trouble with everything, including how I could be finding myself in this situation. How the country could be in this situation.

    • Good article. We watched the show, but the analysis was interesting and I agree for the most part. There’s more news on the late night comedy shows than on the actual news, but this has been true for a while.

  5. Your thoughts echo mine. It’s interesting that we’re both losing sleep over this “thing.” Most nights, I’ve been waking up at about 3 am and anxiously reading the newsfeed on my phone to see what fiasco might have occurred in my few hours of slumber. I’m from WV where my vote did not count as the people here tend to go red. As of late, my husband and I have begun watching goofy comedies before bed–it helps a little.

    • It was another night of anxious dreams with things falling apart and no one cared. This is really getting to me. I keep trying to get away from it, but it follows me. It’s a nightmare whether I’m awake OR asleep.

      • I also have been having nightmares. I’m not sure they are related to 45 but wouldn’t be surprised.

I’m finding it hard to laugh with the late night entertainers. The reality of 45 is so chilling that even with my rogue sense of humor, I find it hard to REALLY laugh. Jon Stewart’s bit last night with Stephen Colbert was more a carefully nuanced tirade than a series of jokes. Stewart was not jesting when he threw down a gaunlet about surviving 45’s tenure in the White House.

This is clearly a test of our mettle.

    • I’ve been watching favorite old movies and TV shows while Marilyn listens to books or blogs.

In the evening, we continue to binge watch a Canadian, turn of the century cop show, “Murdoch’s Mysteries” and wrap things up with “The Daily Show” and Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show”. The latter two give us our news laced with humor.

    • It’s only been 2 weeks? God help us. The State Department is resigning/retiring and other departments will be clearing out.
      I’m disgusted and exhausted.
It’s going to be a long 4 years.
