Doonesbury nailed it 41 years ago. — By Brainwrap
I remember this specific strip too. I was an ardent follower of Doonesbury back in those days. How ironic and sad that his material is relevant 41 years after publication.
A BIT OF HISTORY FOR A BIZARRE WORLD
“The Chairman” refers to Chairman Mao Zedong (also known as Mao Tse Tung). This is the man who founded the People’s Republic of China. He ran the Chinese Communist Party for 25 years until he died about four months after this comic strip ran. He was a ruthless dictator who murdered potentially tens of millions of people. No tears for Mao.
The “translator who can understand him” refers to the fact that he was in terrible health towards the end of his life. He had 3 heart attacks in less than a year. He likely had both Parkinson’s and ALS during his last years. His speech was heavily slurred, so only a “translator” could understand him.
Although our “American” ruler in theory speaks “regular” English, no one understands what he is saying. The rambling, unfocused quality of his ranting means even if you understand every word he says, you still don’t get it. You may think you’ve gotten it, but watch for Tweets. Whatever you think you got, there will be a Trump-o-Twitter that says the opposite — and after that, maybe another few that contradict each other repeatedly.
There are considerable questions about whether Donald Trump knows what he is saying either. That would be another post for a different day.
Next, let us look at Kim Jong-un, the Master of North Korea. No more sane than our own President, this nutcase is flinging nuclear missiles at us and our local allies as if there could never be a price to pay for so doing. The level of stupidity involved for any leader of any country on this planet tossing missiles around as if they were tennis balls for the dog to chase, defies logic, reason, or anything remotely resembling commonsense. It is madness.
So we have our mad (or merely unhinged) President facing off against their unhinged, wacko leader. I can barely catch my breath these days.
Are we back to duck and cover drills? Because that seems to be what is left for us in these wild and crazy days. I can’t understand how we got here again. All my life, the world has been trying to escape from exactly this scenario, yet here we are. Perhaps this world is indeed a merry-go-round. Epically circular.
It is all nonsense. Nothing will be gained by this exercise of nuclear overkill. Nothing acceptable or less good. For anyone, anywhere, this is a lose-lose-lose scenario.

I had a conversation with someone recently and they said “We have Black Ops in this country, right? People who are trained to be assassins. Who we send to other ‘enemy’ countries, to do the work nobody wants to acknowledge is done (and sometimes for very good reason…the sanity involved in some of these missions is questionable). So why don’t ‘they’ (the people who run the madhouse) send some of those guys over to North Korea and quietly get rid of that fly in the ointment of world peace who has horribly bad hair (worse than our own nutbag ‘ruler’ even)?” I don’t know the answer to that, I merely said that I thought there was something more going on behind the scenes that the people running the show right now aren’t telling us. And I got a look that indicated the person I was talking to thought I had drunk some conspiracy theorist koolaid. Well whatever. But Doonesbury continues to be on point, across decades. If it isn’t one nutbag in a position of power, it’s another…the words might change, but the music remains the same.

I think that’s the sort of thing we all have to be vary wary of doing. Certainly if anyone were planning it, we would be the last people to know. On top of everything else, North Korea is a very difficult place to get in or out of. It’s not a “normal” country with “normal” borders. Worse than trying for a hit would be trying and failing. That would be absolutely catastrophic.

I have a friend in China who was a victim in the Cultural Revolution in China. She didn’t like it one bit but she still loves her country.

That’s the thing. We don’t have to love everything our country does or fails to do. We can love it anyway — and people do. That is really what “revolution” is about. If you don’t CARE, you leave. If you care, you stay and fight.

She got most of her post secondary education in the west. Got her doctorate in Physics and worked in the west for awhile then she returned to China, married and is there today.

And it is only the loony politicians that can stop it. We have become the statists. There was a film on our Tv from a place in the states with a Trump majority of supporters. It was sick to listen to the idiots.

And we’ve been putting up with them for a long time. I think it must have been our turn or something.
