TAI CHI AND CARDIOLOGY

Complete this sentence: I want to learn more about …

How the menus work in my cameras. Every time I think I’ve nailed it, I discover yet another sub-menu to a sub-menu with a list of options that means absolutely nothing to me. Does anyone really use all these options? The explanations are meaningless, too. I’m always afraid I’m going to accidentally change something and the camera will never work again!

I swear they add these options just so they can raise the price of the camera because they’ve given you “extra options”!

On a vacation what you would require in any place that you sleep?

A really comfortable bed. If the bed is sufficiently comfortable, I might never leave.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Camera equipment and dog toys. It keeps humans and furry folks happy.

Today we got four new squeaky toys which are, coincidentally, identical to their other, grungier toys. They were overjoyed. Thrilled. All three of them bounded around the house squeaking their toys until, finally, everything stopped squeaking. But for that two hours, they were the happiest dogs in the world.

My favorite!

Even a new camera doesn’t make me quite that happy.

What inspired you this past week? Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.

My cardiologist inspired me to find someone who teaches Tai Chi. I need to get the body moving, even if slowly.

It turns out, someone in Northbridge gives classes. The price is right, too. I am coaxing Garry to come along. The stretching won’t hurt either of us and maybe we’ll meet other crotchety seniors with whom we can hang.

  1. I completed a beginners course in Tai Chi a while back and found it gave relief from my arthritis as well as a greater sense of well-being and calm. it helps also with your concentration and breathing – you should both definitely give it a chance! 😉

I fully agree with the camera menu thing – i have 4 seperate drop down settings menus with 5-8 items on each and understand practically none of them. But maybe we should all try to learn about one menu item at a time together until we understand when and why we should use it and in time we might finally be as cool with our cameras as teenagers are with their app menus on their smartphones?? 🙂

    Who’s with me?

  2. My wife does Tai Chi. She’s big on it. She’s tried to get me into it, but I feel like a fool when I do it. I understand it though. I wouldn’t mind trying a different Martial Art however …

    • Garry said he’d be willing to give it a try. It’s a man teaching it, which might help. I think he’s just trying to encourage me to do it. He’s been worried about my increasing lack of activity.

      • I was very active all my life. Played sports of some kind nearly every day. Then … everybody seemed to break up and move away. Now I mostly sit at my computer – though I work part time 4 days a week it’s not enough, but I can’t seem to find any activity that I enjoy. If I don’t enjoy something I’m not disciplined enough to do it regularly so right now I’m stuck – trying to find something. It’s a problem.

  6. I’m the same with my camera. Every time I touch something it gets all mucked up and I have to switch it off and on again and hope it resets 🙂

    • And usually, mine does NOT reset, so I have to sit there, sometimes for hours, trying to figure out which option I selected (unintentionally) that is making the camera not work. Do we NEED all those options? I sure don’t!

  7. I quite enjoyed my Tai Chi for a few years. There are various systems and ours was the softer one. It is also very easy to practice at home. I had the dvd to my classes. I am also sure I could get more out of my camera, but I have to be quick to shoot one of those moments in life.

    • I would prefer my camera have much easier to use menus. I’m sure most of those setting have nothing to do with photography as I understand it — which mostly requires a good eye, the right lens, and an appropriate meter setting. The ultra complicated menus drive me crazy. I sometimes spend HOURS trying to figure out where to find a particular thing — like the light meter settings — a really basic setting that should be easy to find.

As for Tai Chi, the number of physical problems I’ve got at this point makes getting any exercise difficult. But I also realize I have GOT to get some exercise and walking is becoming difficult. Too much falling. I can only walk now on absolutely flat ground … and we don’t live in a flat ground sort of neighborhood. So this is my attempt to try something different. I’m encouraged that so many people think it works well for we golden oldie folks. I guess I’ll see!

  8. I really did have to laugh at the squeaks no more toys. My dogs don’t have any toys these days apart from a Tennis Ball. They used to have lots of toys, but have not been interested in a very long time. Tai Chi, it’s something I keep saying Hubby and I should do, but somehow never seem to get around to trying. Maybe, just maybe I will check it our when we get back from our holiday. It always looks so graceful. The movements in TaeKwonDo, I used to love the movements more than the kicking and punching, almost like a dance. Very relaxing.
