A Photo a Week Challenge: Raw Emotion
I don’t know how “raw” these are, but they are joyful. Laughing. Which is about as “raw” as my work ever gets. Grief is a bit too personal for me to feel comfortable shooting it.

I really wanted to go with your idea, but I knew I didn’t have ANY pictures that would work. I’m very shy of shooting when people are seriously unhappy. But you know, there is an entire — no kidding, this isn’t a joke — industry based on videotaping funerals. Garry was asked to become involved in such a project because Garry used to be famous for doing the world ‘s absolutely BEST RIP speeches on TV.
Apparently out in the Far Far East, funerals are like weddings. They want all the pictures, the grief, the agony, the speeches. It’s a big cultural thing. I would probably not do well in that climate!

Mormon funerals do not allow pictures or video during the actual service. It’s considered a sacred meeting similar to a Sunday service. Most pictures are taken at the graveside and the viewing before.

These weddings — Garry thinks I’m wrong and it might have been Haitian and we could both be wrong (it was a while ago)– wanted the whole thing including the body in the casket. Garry decided even though it was really good money, it was not for him. Too depressing. But they don’t think of it as depressing. They saw it as “moving on” in a positive way. Amazing how cultures vary.

Yes, I was regarded as THE Funeral guy on Boston TV.
Once, the family of a prominent Boston politician “requested” that I cover the Pol’s last hurrah.
I gave it the deluxe treatment with the inclusion of the man’s beloved “Galway Bay” heard prominently during the closing scenes. The family sent a”Thank you” note the next day. It was posted in the TV newsroom.
