A “NEW” OLD FRIEND IS AN OXYMORON

The red finches are back – old or new friends?

We were watching a show on TV last night and someone was about to dump one of his old friends from childhood. His father pointed out that as you get older, “old friends” become fewer, so if you want to still have anyone to talk to as you age, maybe you want to think about that.

“A new ‘old friend'” said dad, “Is an oxymoron.” Like “senseless violence” (when is it sensible?) or “an instant tradition,” you can’t have a new “old friend.”

Other favorite oxymorons —  if it’s “free for just $5,” it costs five dollars. Even if it’s “free” with shipping and handling, it isn’t free. When AT&T offers you a “free phone” and then tacks on $75 in taxes and fees … it’s not free.

Free means “costs no money.” Not “costs less than it would at retail.”

Probably, so is an upgrade that removes half the functionality you used to depend on. The people who run WordPress should ponder that.

      Mostly, I’ve been losing followers like crazy … and suddenly, there’s a new editing screen. Before I give up on it, I’m going to try it and see if maybe this time, it works. There’s a lot of stuff going on, but after a while, I’ve realized that complaining about it isn’t doing me or anyone else any good.

          I do. Not only that, but Garry’s computer’s battery DIED and I can’t afford to replace it. The battery would cost more than a new computer. And my “baby” computer that I use in the bedroom is ALSO dying and I could fix it, but this little computer has been revamped before and for a pretty cheap little computer, it’s getting very expensive … and maybe if I YELL at them, they’ll die faster.

    Oh and as for WordPress, I sure would like to be able to include photos from the extra storage space I bought….but noooo, I have to reload from my files each time. grrr

    I don’t think “new old friend” is an oxymoron. I have some. They were friends of my brothers that I met after he died. And it felt — and feels — as if we’ve known each other forever and are old friends, but we’re not.

      I know what you mean, but that’s because even if you didn’t spend time together, you have history. When Jeff (my first husband) died, both Garry and Tom were very close to Jeff and they reformatted the friendship with each other. They didn’t have a lot of personal history, but they had a long history with Jeff. And me. I think that is a bit different.

    Same problem with Yahoo, which I use with a loaded gun by the computer. About once a year they announce, with great and breathless fanfare, that they are giving us a wonderful new version of Mail. The screams can be heard in the middle of the Atlantic. And bit by bit they fix it, put back all the old furniture and quietly remove the new shiny plastic stuff, until at the end of the year we almost have a working copy of the old version. Almost.
    It’s one of the reasons I have resisted WP, except to visit. It’s complicated enough in it’s sleeping state, but I’m no longer computer savvy enough to want to get that involved with it.
