Today was Jackie Robinson day in baseball and everyone wore a shirt with the number “42” emblazoned on it. Now, I’m enough of a baseball nerd to know that Jack Robinson’s entry into Major League Baseball was a big deal. A huge deal. It was the true beginning of the break from segregation to whatever we are doing these days.
We watched the movie “42” again. And loved it. Again. You can read the review here and it is one of the best reviews I’ve ever written, along with Garry, the total complete baseball nerd.
The thing is, I’m also a total science fiction nerd — and, speaking of freaky coincidence — Douglas Adams shares my birthday. And we ALL know what he thought of forty-two. It was the number that made the world … well … the world. 42 is the “Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.” It is the answer.
Sadly, the question remains unknown.
So how could Jackie Robinson and the answer to the question “what is the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything” be the same number?
Synchronicity of course. History rhymes and so do numbers. Phone numbers and house numbers and the meaning of life, the universe, and everything. I’m absolutely sure that Douglas Adams knew exactly what he was doing when he picked that number. He knew.
Jackie Robinson and his number, 42, IS the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. It is. Think about it. He broke the world open and it will never, ever go back to the way it was before he did it.

Jackie, the man OFF the field, was inspirational and unforgettable to one young reporter. He minced no words in his conversation with me. He suffered no fools.

He was. An all round individual! I remember watching him play and it was with such almost finesse! if that word applies in baseball, but with him, it did.

Baseball has (to my mind) much more finesse than other sports. Just the way they throw the ball … it’s amazing.

I used to be a baseball fan, watched all kinds of sports (except golf) and knew the stats for so many players. Those days are over, lol. I haven’t got enough time in the day to watch sports these days. It was fun though.

Life will slow down and things like sports will come back. I’m surprised at how many ‘old things’ have dropped back into my life now that the kids are gone and it’s just us two guys and of course, the three (barking because it’s ALMOST dinner time) dogs.

Life slows down and usually, the kids eventually move on. And surprisingly, it’s okay. At first, when I realized the kids were moving, I worried … but a few weeks later … I would have changed the locks before letting them back in. I love having them visit, but not having to worry about keeping everyone happy is such a huge relief.

It is. I think the first time ( I know) the first time I slept more than 4 hours was the day the last child left home. Because we live next door, 10 feet away, I’m back where I started from but with grand children. It’s not over til it’s over haha Round 2!

That’s what I thought too. I knew that the numbers were the same — but I had never thought about them being not merely the same, but the right numbers.
