RDP #13 – SMORGASBORD – Marilyn Armstrong

RDP #13 – Smörgåsbord

Finally, I can spell it! This is one of those words that has permanently escaped the grasp of my spelling.

I don’t have much to say about it, especially since the places that used to serve it seem to have disappeared. These days, we have “buffets,” also known as a huge table full of food, much of which I don’t like.

So I will pass on what my father said about “smorgasbord.”

Go for the expensive food first. They always put the cheap, filling food — potatoes and rice and such — at the beginning. By the time you get to the good food at the end of the table — where they have the shrimp and roast beef — you are already full. Eat the good stuff first.

I always go for the good stuff first. Just as well. I fill up really fast!

  1. Smorgasborg sounds like you would assimilate all the food.

    • And that’s pretty much how buffet eaters act. I’ve seen people come back three or four time with big plates HEAPED with food. They eat it. All of it. It’s impressive.

      • I know. We saw it on the cruise ships too. People would pile their plates high, far more than what you would eat at a normal meal. Later some passengers complained that there was not a lot of variety in the buffet. There was but they tried everything in the first couple of meals.

  2. I remember there was a smorgasbord somewhere around here when I was a kid. They always had a Thanksgiving special, and my parents took us there for the holiday a couple of times. First time I’d ever heard the word, and the only time I’ve ever seen a real smorgasbord (though the buffets are fine for my unrefined tastes). And I always thought the word ended with a G rather than a D…

    • I thought it ended with a “G” too. This is the first time I learned the actual spelling. I feel much smarter. We must have gone to one when I was a kid because I remember the advice. But that’s all I remember.

  3. Hi Marilyn. I’ve tried twice to post to Ragtag today and it never shows up in comments. Have you noticed if yours shows up right away? Or do they have to okay it first. I am having more trouble with all of these new prompt sites. Must just be me.

    • I only found one comment and I don’t know how many I made. I know when I wrote this morning, there weren’t a lot of posts up. The one for Pat Gerber went up, but we correspond a lot. I’m having trouble just getting the post at all, so I wouldn’t be surprised if posting comments is a problem too.

      • Three or four people have posted since I tried to and there are tons of comments, so it must be working. I finally got fandango’s straightened out and Daily Addiction. They have almost no one posting on them and they are easy to use.

        • My stuff isn’t showing up either and I’m getting posts on my following list VERY slowly. They are really beginning to get to me. I’m trying to be patient, but I’m losing it.

    • I’m finding them not only confusing but a bit exhausting. ONE post in the morning was fun, but two is a lot. I’m trying to hang in with it for a while because I think time will sort this out a bit. Also, the people doing this need support or they will give up. But I can’t keep doing two morning prompts plus all the other stuff I do. Especially since I’m having so much trouble finding the prompt. I get a ton of email anyway, so these new things just get buried in the heap of stuff. And as Garry gets closer to his surgery, it’s going to be very busy around here and I am going to have to pull back.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t even LOOK at all the posts I’m following. I don’t have time unless I never leave the computer at all … and lately, I feel exactly as if I never leave the computer. At all.

  4. Funny when you say that, when we were in Rio we would eat at this restaurant called Pelo Quilo. It was a buffet and when you filled your plate they weighed it and charged per the kilo. Now a kilo is a fair bit of food roughly over two pounds. We would always go for the salmon and shrimp first then a few light weight items.
So we were doing according to your father…
