FOWC with Fandango — Setting
Yesterday’s setting was Garry’s first post-surgical checkup at UMass Memorial. Today’s setting is going to be (in an hour from now) our regular family guy to see if we can get his blood pressure a little lower
Mostly, it’s good news.
We discovered that he has residual hearing in his right ear and more of it than we expected. This is a good thing because it will make getting “natural” sounds in his “implanted” ear easier. The device with his own hearing will give him better highs and lows.
He won’t get all his super-high-tech equipment until August 24th, but the doctor is pretty sure he’s going to have good hearing fast. Like maybe immediately.
No one can explain how in the world he got Blue-Tooth from my speaker without external equipment, but he did. My speaker also has a small transmitter and Garry was wearing powered headphones, so something happened. But regardless, once he has all the rest of the gear, it won’t happen without special equipment.
The incision is healed and all the wires and magnets and coils are in the right places in his head. Neat and clean. I’m trying to get him to send me a photograph of it, but we haven’t figured out how to turn the x-ray into a photograph. Yet. But I’ll keep trying. It’s really interesting.
Garry is very tired. He thinks it’s because he’s a “right-side” sleeper and that’s the ear that had the surgery. He hasn’t been able to sleep in a comfortable position since the surgery, but he can at this point if he wants to since everything is nicely healed.
He also looks sleepy all the time. I think he’s still got a bit of hangover from the anesthesia. He also needs to get back to doing normal stuff, including exercise. Sitting around all the time isn’t his most healthy choice.
Now, we wait another 18 days and then — magic.
He’s ready to go now and I don’t blame him, but they won’t put the technology in place until everything is 100% healed, so they always let it go slightly over a full month. Just to be sure.
Meanwhile, to keep him sane, the Red Sox are winning and it keeps him from watching the news and getting completely crazy.

I like Garry’s shirt, for me it didn’t have to be the Red Sox but any – let’s say – seaside theme would do just fine….
And it’s clear to me that Garry never had any children. Because….. when you’re pregnant you learn pretty quick that the only way you can snatch a bit of sleep is lying on your back – so there’s still something to learn.
Am very happy for both of you that his hearing might come back sooner and better than expected. THAT WILL BE THE DAY(s)!!!! Halleluja 🙂

This same designer also makes other kinds of shirts. Nice designs. Good colors. But this did seem a good year for the Sox and Garry needed something to cheer him up. This definitely cheered him up 😀

It’s really incredible. I was able to post an xray…it was on a CD and I just saved it to my computer.

This one wasn’t on a CD. It was a CT scan, but I’m hoping we find a way. It really is fascinating.

LOVE the shirt! Awesome. Totally delighted to hear everything is on schedule and Garry is healing well. I can’t wait to learn he can hear. It’s completely exciting. You’ve been through a lot, but it will be magical to hear again. I expect there will be a loud hurrah! “)

It’s a GREAT shirt. Garry will hopefully feel better soon. I sure hope so.

Covert, I really LOVE that shirt. You should see the smiles, stares and thumbs up I get from folks in the supermarket, the social center of our little town. Our town.

It’s hot here too and my Colombian friend likes it. Yes, stay away from the news.

Does he clean? Mow the lawn? Haul the trash? But he would really hate the winter. We do, why not him too?

He hates the winter. It is tough if the place you lived was 85 every day of the year. He cleans and hauls trash. As for mowing, he will take the mower out of the basement for me to use.

I hope Garry gets some decent rest sooner rather than later… but with the contdown ticking away, I can’t imagine rest will be easy!

No, it isn’t easy and having to sleep on his back is difficult for him. But hopefully, as it heals, it will hurt less and work better. He’s very tired. I can see it in his eyes.

You must be too…I know what worrying about someone you love does to you. xx

I feel almost as exhausted as he does, but this has been a wicked summer. It’s also so terribly hot, so the combination of the heat and the surgery and getting hacked … it’s a bit much. I don’t want to tell him about it because he’s got his own stuff to deal with, but I’ll be glad when we get to fall!

I can imagine, Marilyn. It all adds to the weight of it… and he’s bound to be your first concern. Just look after you too x

Let’s hope the Red Sox will continue to be a positive diversion from all the crap that is otherwise swirling around us.

Thanks, Fandango. Sox are doing their best to keep a smile on my face. They beat the bee-jeezus out of the poor Baltimore Orioles last night. I love it. And, The Yanquis were bashed hard by the Texas Rangers last night. AYE-men! Double headers scheduled today but seems to be raining everywhere. Boo!

The miracles of modern science. I am so glad that things are progressing. I had to sleep for four months on my back after I broke my leg because I could not move otherwise, but these things come to pass and we wonder afterwards what the problem was.

He is still sore and nervous about it. Even though he CAN try it, I think it worries him. He’ll get over it. I’ve had to start sleeping on my back almost entirely. It’s the only position that doesn’t hurt.

I think the heat will have a lot to do with it. Thanks for sharing the process with us Marilyn. This cochlear implant process is very interesting and it’s nice to hear from a first hand experience with it.

It’s going well, though Garry is awfully weary.

Leslie, my cochlear implant journey is being video taped to spread the word about the surgical process. I’ll be interested to see how it ends.

I’ll be interested in how you can hear, Garry. There’s a whole other world out there.
