RDP Friday: TRUCK
I was commenting yesterday and how much I like our new car. Our new orange Renegade. One of the things I said was that it was a bit “truckier” than our previous Jeep and I liked it.
It sits firmer on the road.
Has a nice tight, solid feel to it.
And these are other trucks … not like ours!

Looks quite similar to my Escape. I love my Escape. Sometimes I refer to it as a car (when I’m just driving), and sometimes I refer to it as a truck (when I’m hauling stuff home from Home Depot, or when I anticipate going through deep snow). In snow country, you gotta have a four-wheeler of some kind, and it’s gotta have good ground clearance, which both of our vehicles have. Have fun this winter.

We were assured that THIS little buggy could get us out of ANYTHING, the exception probably (though unspoken) being ice. Only chains or a tow truck will get you out of ice, I think. But for anything else, it should be great. The Patriot was a good little car too, but it never felt as tight and as “trucky” as the Renegade. And I love the color. We can always find it in the parking lot. We tried for a long time to make it without 4-wheel drive, but really, you can’t. Especially not where we live, on the south (downward) side of this street. I was getting REALLY tired of not being able to leave the house until the ice and snow melted. This one should do the job!
My son thinks it’s “cute but ugly.” I think it’s kind of adorable.

The States is a trucking country always on the move. I like the colour of your truck

We just live in an area that gets tons of snow. AND we live on the downward slope of a small mountain. You really can’t get up and down our driveway without a four-wheeler. We tried. I can’t count the number of times we got stuck in the house for days at a time because we couldn’t get out of our own driveway.
Some people own trucks because they think they are cute, but around here and anywhere in this region — New England, upstate New York, Canada … you really NEED a truck. It’s not for fun. It lets you go out in the winter.

Nice… I have a few lorry 🚛 photos.

Having one of our own is a huge relief. Maybe THIS year we can actually get up out driveway without a plow!

What’s its clearance? (I still want one; I’m just not ready to take on the debt…I have to sort that out).

I don’t know. A little taller than me, maybe 5 foot three-ish?

Under the car — how much room?

CORRECTION: About 9″ for 2018. I looked it up. Don’t know if ours (2015) is exactly the same, but I doubt it’s much different. About the same as a Wrangler and more than the Patriot. This one will get us out of just about anything. It has special settings for snow, sand, mud, and (I think) ice.

I really love ours. I haven’t loved a car in a long time, either. I liked the Patriot and I like the Cruiser, but I really LOVE the Renegade. It isn’t a big car, though. Think Bear. Probably would need to put rear seat flat to give him room in the back.

I drive a Focus hatchback right now. Bear and Dusty are fine back there — we did ok when Mindy was with us, too. Humans seldom occupy my car. 🙂

It’s usually me, Garry plus any number of dogs in the way back and back seat. I this car is probably around the same size as the Focus.

What’s really great is that it’s just $10 more a month than we were paying before and since we are obviously going to be paying forever, we might as well have something we really like.

Big truck, low bridge. Some don’t notice until they fail to make it through. I’ve seen it. Peels the cab back like a can of sardines.

We have a lot of low bridges in this area and yup, at least half a dozen a year peel the top off their truck, get hauled away and fined big money because all those low bridge areas are marked “NO TRUCKS” as well as “low bridge.” Fortunately, the railroad bridge is okay for most normal trucks.

Nice and compact, I like it.

And a great, firm ride with a lot of 4-wheel gears — not just for snow, but for sand, mud, and much more.

It’s a good all terrain vehicle….

Because of the Asians, especially the Japan, American car manufacturers have begun to learn how to build a car that handles well on the road vs. just feels cushy ‘n’ comfy.

Jeeps have always been a bit of a world unto themselves. The Renegade is more built more like an old army jeep than a normal American car.

You ever really ride in an old army jeep? First off, like many government items from the wars, Jeeps were built by several companies and rode like you were sitting on the road itself without the benefit of the vehicle, or comfy seating. Believe me when I say your renegade is nothing like an army jeep.., and be glad that it isn’t.

I have ridden in them, but I think they had all been rebuilt to a gentler ride.

Not the real deals I’m talking about. Rebuilds don’t count as there are too few of them around. Just watch a couple of episodes of MASH where those old bouncy, wouncy things, from WW II & Korea, were used in the production of that series. Not your Renegade really. The newer Jeeps are way cushy compared to what you mention. I just don’t think you’ve been in a genuine old “army Jeep.”

Ben, I remember the old jeep from my stint with the Marines. You could feel the “family jewels” bouncing in time with the road ruts.
