What’s the most ironic thing you’ve ever witnessed?

I’m not sure that “ironic” is the right word here. Twice I’ve been in dangerous places and the dangerous people carefully got me to a safe place, but that’s not ironic. Just … surprising.

Let’s talk turkey.  Pro or con?   If pro, which part do you enjoy most?  Is it for Thanksgiving (American Style anyway) only?

I think I’ve had more turkey than I ever wanted. Part of it is that I like dark meat and there’s almost no dark meat on turkeys these days. It’s all white meat. Too dry. I spent a lot of years of eating over-cooked turkey. The bigger the turkey, the dryer it was.

Some could have been ground up and used for beach sand. Even fresh, unfrozen turkey became food I was required to eat. I always liked the side dishes better than the turkey, especially cranberry sauce. And the pies! Actually, just give me the cranberry sauce and a side of three or four pieces of pie.

If you’d like, share one thing you wish you’d said to someone else, but now you’ll never have the chance.

Call it failing memory. I don’t remember anything. I don’t have a single thing I wish I’d said because either I don’t remember if I said it — and if I do, I don’t know what would have happened had I said something else. The future is a mystery.

What odd smell do you really enjoy?

I have almost no sense of smell, but if I stick my nose into a rose, that’s nice. I guess that isn’t odd unless you find a bee in there.

Leaves are everywhere!

My son hired a cleanup crew to get the leaves out of the yard. I feel downright blessed!

      1. Okay, I know how this plays out.

        Turkey: I like white meat. Marilyn likes dark meat. Whatever! Oh, I also love stuffing (The real thing).

        This Thanksgiving, we’re not doing Turkey. Sorry.

        Thanksgiving memories: As a mouthy kid at my Aunt and Uncle’s house “in the country”. Grownups sat at one table. Kids at another table. Us Kids ate and ate and ate. Wouldn’t try that now.

        1. I remember eating way too much turkey and chilling afterwards because we couldn’t do anything else! This year I’ll be with friends, then go away for a week afterwards!

    1. We have wild turkeys all over the places. They like walking in the middle of the road and they can stop traffic for a long time. If you try to move your car, they attack your car, which is pretty funny. Not so funny if they decide to attack YOU. They are big birds and pretty strong.

    2. Our local “wild” turkeys slowly saunter across the street, oblivious to traffic and the serenade of horns. They must have political ambitions.

        1. Nobody eats wild turkey, It’s illegal to shoot them and anyway, talk about TOUGH. Those birds have muscles. But there are an awful lot of them. They hang out at the farms and they get food there. They really do saunter down the middle of roads, too.

  1. I’m not a huge fan of turkey either. I find it dry compared to chicken. Of course, we don’t do Thanksgiving over here so turkey is more of a Christmas thing but we generally get lamb because we like it and a leg of lamb is so expensive now it is something you have for a treat, not every Sunday as we did in my childhood.

    1. The price of lamb has gotten SO high that even as a treat, we almost never have it. It’s Garry’s favorite, but even a small piece will be 15 or more dollars. A bit high! Beef is relatively cheap, but lamb IS special.

The other week I nearly bought 2kg of shoulder roast which was on special but the special ended before my shopping day and I decided I could not spare $25 even though that amount of meat would have meant several extra frozen meals. I used good ‘ol mince meat instead and made a Shepherd’s Pie.

    1. Covert, I have a sharp sense of smell — probably a “make up” for my poor hearing. With 3 dogs, I am not thrilled to have a sharp sense of smell.

  2. I’m a dark meat fan as well, and always seem to have plenty of it to eat (especially if I cook the bird for myself). The problem is finding a small enough bird for one person. Turkey does get old if you have 3-4 months worth in the freezer…plus the last bits taste ‘off’. Some tricks I learned for avoiding the dry white is a) don’t overcook it, but be prudent and make sure it’s cooked ENOUGH…salmonella isn’t funny.

    b) since the advent of those humongous sized bake-in bags, dry turkey should be a thing of the past. The bag keeps the juices in the turkey and sort of steams things along.
    c) turn the bird upside down for the majority of the baking time, only putting breast side up to brown it. Moist.

    But. I don’t know if the two or three of y’all would eat a whole turkey anyway….and it’s presumptive to think that advice is something anyone else wants.

    1. We don’t have a big enough crowd for any turkey these days anyhow. I think we’re going with ham this year and as many pies as we can fit on the counters. Next year, we’ll go straight to dessert and skip the dinner.

      1. Mince pie? I like your idea of skipping dinner and going straight to dessert. Wonder how my tummy would feel? It’s sensitive these days after many years of abuse. I fear my tummy may litigate if I eat inappropriately.

  3. I like turkey. A lot. I can eat it several days in a row. Especially good stuffing. Sad when it’s all gone. And I’ve never understood people who “O NO not turkey again!” One year I bought 5 turkeys. There was a deal.
    Yeah. Pass the cranberry jelly please!

  4. I love the smell of leaves in the fall. I’ve always liked the smell of wet cement and fresh cut boards. I guess I should have been a contractor!
    I love dark meat turkey also. Much more flavor.
