More Christmas Cactus – FOTD – 11/30/2018
We didn’t really have sunshine today, though they promised it. But at least it wasn’t dark and gloomy all day. So I took some more pictures of the cactus developing.
I remembered today that sometimes, instead of a standard but, the end of the cactus turns red and then becomes a flower. So there is more than one kind of bud on a Christmas Cactus. If someone has a good biology background, I’d like to hear about this — how one plant has two ways of creating a flower.

It’s dark and gloomy here and there isn’t one bud on my Christmas Cactus. Thank you for sharing Marilyn, at least there is hope.

It may bloom in January or February. I’ve got one which shows no buds or even red leaf edges.

I could be wrong but i think red segments develop from age and lack of water.
I got 2 of mine from a friend who had just bought a property that had been vacant for a time and there were cactii left behind in hanging baskets outside – they had turned almost all red with no green segments in sight. After a couple of years of care and watering this year the cactii have green segments growing at the end of 2 or 3 red ones? They have flowered in the usual way each year.

I don’t think so. I’ve seen the red tips turn into buds.

They certainly make a nice splash of colour in the dull days. My first bud is now opening today, but have not had time to take pictures so far.

The gutter cleaning guys are here, so three dogs are in massive BARK BARK BARK BARK mode. When everything settles down and shuts up …
