On the first day of Christmas
And so there we were. The family. We actually opened presents before dinner because no one could wait. And that’s sort of funny because they were all small presents. Not big, grand surprises. And I think everyone liked their stuff.
Owen brought over a record player and a bunch of Christmas 78 RPM records. They still play, too. Lots of crackle and pop. Amazing.
There was a roast at least a pound bigger than we needed, making me wonder what I’m going to do with the food I defrosted for tomorrow because we have a lot of food. Really. A lot of food. An entire unopened key lime pie, too and half a cheesecake.
Good thing I didn’t also make apple pie.

Key lime pie sounds delicious to me.

We have more food than we need for days. John does not like ham or turkey, so I made too much of something else. We will take the key lime pie, however, as we are a bit tired of gingerbread cookies.

I think I’m going to freeze the roast part of the meal because I can’t face it today and it will have a new life … in a few weeks, I’m sure. I usually make gingerbread, but I got tired of baking. I am devoted to Key Lime pie!

You can send the gingerbread cookies to us, Rich. Merry Christmas to You and John.

We’ll trade you for a key lime pie, and we have a lot of these!

Okay, Rich. Who’s the player to be named later to wrap this swap?

I guess we can throw in some minor league Black Forest cake.

Rich, works for me. But I’m not giving Scott Boras anything — not even a lick of the icing.

Scott has enough already.

I miss the crackle and pop of records… especially the ones that have been played so often, the vinyl’s nearly worn out on them. Have a great Christmas!

The crackle, pop, and occasionally endless repeating as the needle hits a scratch are surprisingly soothing.

Squirrel, I could hear those “extraneous” sounds on the ’78’s – with my cochlear implant. Made it all the more enjoyable. Merry Christmas, Squirrel.

Owen has hundreds of them. They are our fallback position for holiday festivities.

My first husband (died 1992) came from an Austrian family and they celebrated on Christmas Eve, so I just followed along.

Enjoy the feast. If I was nearer I would help you eat it. We always had the custom of listening to Bing‘s Christmas record LP

Tomorrow, we’ll watch the movie. And maybe a few others.

We listened to Bing on old ’78 recordings last night — “White Christmas”, “Silent Night” and other goodies including Gene Autry’s “Rudolph, The Red Nosed Reindeer”. So very nice. Merry Christmas, Pat and Marcel.

I always thought living alone would mean I’d get a lie in and beans on toast for lunch…but the alarm was set for an hour earlier even than usual so I could cook before dashing out 🙂

I was only expecting my son, but then I discovered that my granddaughter and her mother just assumed they were coming, even though no one had called me to talk about it. So it was five for dinner and I realized I don’t cook for a lot of people very often anymore. I keep thinking it should be someone else’s turn already … shouldn’t it?

I’ve wondered about that too… It’s not even light yet and two dozen freshly baked mince pies are cooling down…

Garry has been hunting for a mince pie all year. They don’t sell it anymore, so you have to buy the mince online and it’s expensive, THEN bake the pie. We went with cheesecake and never made it to the Key Lime (my personal favorite). Everyone was stuffed from dinner. No dessert room!
