The Last Cactus Flower – FOTD – 01/08/2019

All of a sudden, in just two days, the last bud bloomed, the other flower closed up and I think by the end of the week, both plants will go into retirement for a few months.

On a more positive note, I have a new shoot coming in from my orchids. No buds yet. Just the tall, naked shoot.  It will be weeks before it turns into buds and more weeks until it flowers. It had two shoots, but one withered. The other looks healthy.

This one really is pink

    Your’s has certainly done better than mine has, Marilyn. I think mine must be pot bound, it’s a very old plant.

    I like it when the blooms turn translucent or, as I would have said (less beautifully so) transparent…. their last days/hours when their initial colour gets tired, the rims curl up in a brownish ‘I can’t hold any longer’, the surrender before death…. Well shown and beautiful description.

    (I just wonder why I feel like that every morning… 🙂 )

    What a great shot of that last bloom! I love watching my Christmas cactus, one with white flowers the other pink. Sometimes they surprise me and become Easter cactus too! 😉

      It’s not that unusual. Although in theory, they bloom in mid-winter, that can be any time from October to January and I’ve had a second blooming around Easter and even in June. They don’t have a regular pattern for blooming, which is why, I suppose, they are such a treat.
