THE CYCLONE! – Marilyn Armstrong

RDP Friday: CYCLONE

The first time I rode the Cyclone, I was 8, as were my friends. Mary’s mom dropped us at the rides and went to visit a friend while we girls rode the Cyclone for hours. It was off-season and if there weren’t any people waiting, they’d let kids stay on as long as they could.

I rode that beast many more times until a few years ago when my bones and Garry’s said “Enough!” and we said goodbye.

  1. I thought I’d try your random post selector and ended up here 🙂

You are very brave going on these, went on one once and never again!!!

  2. Our older son is an electrician and is currently working on the Yukon Striker at Wonderland Toronto. Apparently they will get a chance to ride on it before Wonderland opens this year. I think I’ll take a pass on that one.

  3. I’d never have the nerve to ride one but I love the way they look especially the wooden ones.

    • Tas, the Cyclone was an epic ride. When you reach the top and look down, your life passes before you in a blur of a second before that gut-wrenching downward rush.

  4. My last excursion into riding rollercoasters was when I was 16. The safety chain came loose, the other seat belt thing came off and at the height of the rollercoaster ride, I was being sucked out when the young man who was handicapped saved my life. He threw himself across me and held me down until the ride stopped. Unfortunately, the people in charge wouldn’t believe we hadn’t deliberately released the mechanism and a day later another 16 years old died after being sucked out of the ride. I always imagined it was likely the same seat I and my friend had been in. I was lucky, very lucky.

  5. Ah, Coney Island! When I was 15, my boyfriend (the one I should have married) used to take me there for most of our dates before he went into the Army Air Corps. I loved it.

    • My mother had loved it when she was a girl and I came to love it too. Garry loved it also. In fact, all of us who grew up in New York loved Coney Island. The beach, the food, that smell of all those food places cooking at the same time. I was grateful to Nathans for at least being Kosher. At least I knew what I WASN’T eating 😀 Garry and I kept riding roller coasters until just a few years ago when we had agree that our bones couldn’t take that much jarring … but at least we ended on a high note.

      • I think I officially crossed the bridge into “Old Guy Hood” with our last Coney Island visit. The Cyclone was too much for me and my back. So sad. Boo hoo me.
