FOWC with Fandango — Battery
So there was a terrible movie, released on July 4, 1996. It was called “Independence Day” and was about the invasion of Earth by Aliens (not from Central America — the outer space variety).
It featured an all-star cast and made mountains of money.
Directed by Roland Emmerich
Produced by Dean Devlin
Written by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich
Starring:
Will Smith
Bill Pullman
Jeff Goldblum
Mary McDonnell
Judd Hirsch
Margaret Colin
Randy Quaid
Robert Loggia
James Rebhorn
Vivica A. Fox
Harvey Fierstein
Budget $75 million
Box office $817.4 million
Remember Jeff Goldblum’s Apple computer? How it ran all day for a week, was never recharged yet still had enough juice in it to send a virus to the spaceship trying to destroy the Earth?
I want THAT battery.

I live the focus of your disbelief. Aliens invading? Sure, totally possible. Death rays coordinated from space, annihilating all major centers of power around the globe? Sure. Sure. It could happen. A computer that can upload a virus even though we have less than an hour to devise a system of integration in an unknown language written by telepaths? Heck yeah!
But a long-lived battery without backup? C’mon!!! Who are they trying to kid?

The best thing about the movie was the soundtrack. The score was beautifully written by David Arnold. Once I got the tape (then CD), I never watched the movie again. Too many cliches and too much b.s., but the music was awesome.

Me too.., where can I buy one? True the movie was terrible, but the A-list cast and moments of comedy made it watchable. I’ve watched it a couple of times just for brainless entertainment.

And that’s why these movies sell well. Mindless. I just keep remembering that battery.

Amazon probably has one, new or used.

I remember that one. I didn’t know it was so successful.

It was the highest money-maker to that date and it’s still huge, even more than 20 years later. Proving we’ll watch anything with enough CGI and space ships.
