TOO MANY MURDER MYSTERIES – Marilyn Armstrong

RDP Thursday: PROXY

As soon as whoever it is — usually, a child or grandchild of some older person shows up clutching a proxy in hand, evil will be done. The old person will be forced out of his home, all his possessions will be stolen right down to and including his most comfortable chair.

The two Barnabys

Soon, a scream will echo through the halls of the lordly manor as the corpse is discovered.

The REAL star of the show, Sykes

Will it be the old person or the young person … or, sometimes, someone apparently completely disconnected from the event? Barnaby and his sidekick Ben will investigate.

A little map of Midsomer

The truth will always surface and that person found dead — who I assure you will not be the only person found dead because no good Midsomer Murder has fewer than three murders in any episode — will ultimately be discovered to have some hidden, furtive relationship with everyone else.

Typical local home in Midsomer

Who is everyone else? Family, of course. And the wealthier and nobler the family, the more murders will have occurred before the show ends.

I always feel short-shrifted if there are fewer than three murders in an episode. And there has to be at least one scream.

  1. I sometimes feel sorry for the neighborhood because once Barney shows up for the first murder, there’s bound to be two more. I hate it when an old person gets killed, so sad.

    • Yes, but this isn’t a very serious murder mystery. For one thing, they’d be running out of people by now. Garry thinks they bring them in by bus.

    • Elva, real estate values can boom if the murder investigations get the proper spin.

Years back, I covered a grisly triple homocide in a cemetery where many graves were overturned. I LOVED doing my “standup”, walking through the vandalized cemetery where you could see skeletons. GREAT video. A realtor told me the market boomed after my “solid” coverage.

      • You were a good reporter, so I can appreciate where you are coming from. So odd that murder is an attraction.

        • Elva, you’d be amazed how newsroom execs are bouyant when murders occur. It means “if it bleeds, it leads”. No kidding. I often privately prayed for violence to take a holiday. It meant I could do features – “people” stories. But features aren’t sexy for execs. They think viewers will tune out. But that’s wrong. Viewers ENJOY those features. They told me so – many times – over the decades. The suits wouldn’t believe me.

  2. I never get to catch these. I am not sure when it is on here. We do catch Shakespeare and Hathaway, but some weeks there no even one murder. We also see Death in Paradise so I guess the title gives it away.

  3. Like a lot of British TV shows the scenery is as big a star as the lead characters for me. Mind you I don’t think I’d like to live in the most murderous (fictional) county in England. I always wondered why, if Barnaby was such a good investigator he couldn’t catch the murderer before they killed again. I did enjoy the show although I haven’t watched it much since John Nettles left. David used to like Inspector Morse, have you seen that?

    • Some of these shows aren’t currently on the air here. We get Acorn and they have a lot of stuff, but things get old and they take them off and replace them. I like the new Barnaby. He has a GREAT dog.

    • I love spotting the big Brit stars from the 60’s now doing character work. Hayley “Pollyanna” Mills as a crabby senior citizen. Who would believe Hayley has grown up and is now a senior citizen?

  6. You got to love those Midsomer Mysteries. They always take place in the most charming little villages and you’d think they’d run out of people to kill.
