LITTLE CREATURES IN AUTUMN – Marilyn Armstrong

We have quite a collection of creatures on our deck. Not only did the little chipmunk get up on the deck today, he managed to get up on the feeder, too. I have no idea how he did it. Good jumper? He can’t climb like the squirrels and he’s less than half their sign, too. Nor has he wings.

Still hungry after all those seeds!

Don’t let me interrupt your dinner

Magic chipmunk

The all year toad

Tufted Titmouse in Autumn

Golden foliage

Still got an appetite

Probably a titmouse

Rose-breasted Nuthatch

White-breasted Nuthatch

Downy Woodpecker

Red-Bellied Woodpecker

But he did it. Sorry, I didn’t get a picture, but I was doing other things and I have learned to finish one thing before I start another. If I don’t finish what I’m doing, it’s entirely possible I won’t even remember what I was doing — much less finish it.

  1. I may have told you about our chipmunks but I just love them. So cute! Unfortunately, thinking I was being nice, I fed them once…just for a couple of days…just a small handful of seeds…and within a week, we were inundated!! Huge mistake as they found their way into our car engines, and then ate themselves through wires and insulation into the cabin. Yikes.
I had to apologize to them for closing their newly opened local restaurant. It took a couple of seasons for them to stop coming around. Now we get one or two a year and they are the primary entertainment for the cats.

All the photos above are beautiful!

    • So far. we just seem to have one, but I’m sure the rest of the family is waiting in the wings. I think they are afraid of the squirrels, of which we have MANY. It gets complicated. It always gets complicated. But this year, I didn’t put out a flat feeder and that makes it harder for the furry ones to get to the seeds. So the chipmunks just eat leftover seeds on the deck and the squirrels hang on the feeders. I think it takes them all day to get very little food! The birds use the feeders when the furries aren’t around. I’ve stopped trying to be accomodating — and the feeders are VERY far from the cars and they are on the second floor AND they are hanging on hooks.

So far, so good. WE have enought trouble with mice getting into the cars!

  2. Mice get into cars? Wow! Those pictures are wonderful, Marilyn! Thanks so much for sharing them…the variety of birds you get is amazing, I’m glad you provide for the furried and the feathered as the weather turns cold. 🙂

  3. A lady I used to house sit for used to spread kitty litter around her car before she left to deter mice. I am not sure why this worked but she always did it. The car was locked in a shed. Maybe it was used kitty litter and smelled of her cat.
