LOOK FOR THE FLAGON WITH THE DRAGON – Marilyn Armstrong

It’s either in the chalice from the palace … or the vessel with the pestle … or possibly, the flagon with the dragon. One of them has the brew that is true, but if you mistakenly drink the wrong one? Then you’ve consumed the pellet with the poison. And your goose, so to speak, is cooked.

Herein I praise some of the funniest movie dialogue ever to grace a screen. This particular “bit” has been going through my head since yesterday.

I defy you to memorize the words and keep them in order. I’ve been trying to remember them in order for decades, to no avail. I always lose track eventually.

Maybe you’ll have better luck but I doubt it!

    Ah! The often under rated Danny Kaye. I watched many of his movies as a youth. And laughed myself silly…

    A true classical comedy, one of the best. Danny Kaye spewed forth those words in double time. I wonder how many takes it took before the final one.

      I’m just guessing here — I think Kaye – the consummate pro – probably got it on the FIRST take and shot more to make sure everyone was okay with the scene/s.

      Lois, Kaye’s scenes with Basil Rathbone were so funny. Rathbone was a master swordsman (Better than Errol Flynn, really!). It’s said that Rathbone worked hard not not crack up with Kaye’s comic schtick on the fencing stuff — Would’ve loved to have been on this set just to see and hear the laughter.

    Wonderful! I can’t help wondering how many takes they had to do for this scene! Mind you, would we know if they’d got it wrong? Love it. I haven’t seen this film, but I really think I should. 🙂

    This was the first Danny Kaye movie I ever saw and I still think it’s one of the funniest movies ever (from a mid-twentieth century perspective). Danny Kaye was great.

      My FAVORITE Danny Kaye movie. We used to try this bit during my working days. One of my best friends – a news cameraman and fellow movie maven would toss it to me as we were setting up for an interview with some Pol. We saved this for the most dubious pols.
      Jack to Garry: “Excuse us Senator/Congressman/Governor__________, Garry — is it the flagon with the dragon?”
      I’d peer at the pol, bite my bottom lip and shake my head in deep thought, “Oh, Jack. It’s the brew that is true”. The Pol would always be perplexed, bewitched, bothered and confused. Jack and I would share winks and smiles.
      Get it? Got it. Good.
