BUT THE BIRDS KEEP EATING THE SEEDS AND GROWING FAT — Marilyn Armstrong

The little red house finches are back! Not just a few of them, but dozens of them. I was very happy to see them.

Nuthatch

Cardinal

Carolina Wren and Nuthatch with falling snow

    • As the weather gets colder, they eat more. They are pretty small and they count on some fatty layers to keep them warm in the cold. A couple of ours get REALLY fat. The bigger birds — the cardinals and blue jays and doves get quite wide. I was surprised that the cardinal actually could reach the seeds his stomach was so big.

But it’s better than watching them shake and shiver in the bushes with nothing to eat. I’d rather see them fat.

  1. Had a Chinook today – warm wind from the West that bring above zero temperatures and melt the snow. We’ve had about 4 so far this year. Believe me, they are welcome breaks in what would otherwise be a long bleak winter. Winter is tolerable if we get a favorable number of Chinooks. Last year we had hardly any. That was not good. Not sure how the birds feel about it.
