THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND A WORD I WOOF – Marilyn Armstrong

Today we vacuumed the living room and changed the sofa covers. We moved all the things out of the way, including the step stool Bonnie uses to get up on the sofa. Some hours later, I was doing something on the computer and Bonnie was barking and whining at me. She barks a lot anyway, but she never whines.

It was too early for dinner — even for her — so I finally asked her “What’s the matter? What do you want?”

She walked over to her step stool and walked back and BARKED at me.

I put the stool back where it belongs and she happily jumped up on the sofa. I could almost hear her saying, “Those dumb two legs. They never understand a word I say!”

  1. One morning my beautiful shepherd mix started to verbalize to me. It surprised me and I began to laugh. I dunno, but the look she gave me was one of pure hurt. I felt so bad that I never did that again, and instead would just talk back to her and ask what she wanted? That seemed to make her feel much better and I actually began to understand what she was saying. Life was good, at home, from that moment, until I had to put her down…, a very sad day for me.

  2. lol. I always talk to Loki. He is very focal with his sighs when he’s impatiently awaiting his walk or his favourite bone which he received at 9 30 every night and he gave me a hug yesterday! we were both dumbfounded by that. And that infamous grin of his. All eloquent. Its so adorable when he cocks his head left and right when you talk and he doesn’t quite get your meaning. I’m sure they understand more than we know! That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it, lol

  4. my Dasher uses a step stool to get up on his sofa..you do note I said HIS sofa. God forbid we either move the stool or attempt to actually SIT on our sofa.

  5. Pudge has such a step stool and yes, the sarcasm in that dog’s gaze is intense when I’ve moved that stool away from the couch and he has to ‘tell’ me to put it back. He is the master of the woeful sigh though, he rarely barks unless it’s the ‘danger danger!!’ bark aimed at the errant leaf or plastic bag blowing past my back window or some yahoo at the countertop factory west of me revving up their forklift (he hates those guys over there for some reason)….he’s merely letting me know that things would be so much better if I spoke his language..

    • Duke has a serious spite on our lefthand neighbors. If they are out in their drive or yard, he is obsessed with them. But Bonnie is the only one who obviously intends to communicate directly. She also likes knocking the step-stool out of place so we have to put it back. I swear she is cackling while we do it.
