Who Sang It Best? by Rich Paschall

Maybe it’s much too early in the game
Oh, but I thought I’d ask you just the same
What are you doing New Year’s?
New Year’s eve?

Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight
When it’s exactly twelve o’clock that night
Welcoming in the New Year
New Year’s eve

Maybe I’m crazy to suppose
I’d ever be the one you chose
Out of a thousand invitations
You received

Oh, but in case I stand one little chance
Here comes the jackpot question in advance
What are you doing New Year’s?
New Year’s Eve?

Frank Loesser (Guys and Dolls) wrote the song in 1947 and it was first recorded by Margaret Whiting that same year. You can hear it above, but we could find no actual video of her singing it.

The doo-wop group The Orieoles had a hit with it in 1949 which stayed on the charts into 1950. That is the second You Tube video above.

The perpetually cute Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt posted a rather amateur video of this in 2011 which has gone viral. It has well over 20 million views.  It is the third video above.

A few years ago we posted a New Year’s article that included Seth MacFarlane singing the song with an added intro that many have used. MacFarlane is the creator of some of your animated favorites and voices multiple characters on his show, Family Guy. The multi talented performer is quite a singer as well and you can check that out here.

Frank Loesser did not intend for the song to be a holiday tune. He was looking well off into the future, “Maybe it’s much too early in the game.” According to his daughter, Susan, “It always annoyed my father when the song was sung during the holidays.”

Who do you think sang it best?

  1. OK, I know.., but I have to say it. Zooey & Joseph. What are the chances that two lefties would get together to play music?

    • Good point. I knew Gordon-Levitt was a lefty but did not pay much attention to them both being leftires in the video. Cool touch, I think.

      • Rich, LOVE the song. Wonder what “Maggie” was doing with Martin & Lewis? A nightclub show?
I recall Deanna Durbin singing this in one of her early 40’s films.
It is remembered by those of us of a certain age – as a holiday song.
Rich, I hope you had a mellow New Year’s Eve.
Here’s to a better version of life in the year ahead.

        • I watched the ball drop in honor of Dick Clark. There is a great TV tradition here of running old movies over night. WGN ran Monkey Business before midnight, showed the countdown for Chicago, then ran Animal Crackers. Hooray for Captain Spaulding!

          • Rich, I like that local tradition.

TCM ran “The Thin Man” movie series. For some reason, “The Thin Man” is a New Years Eve special for many TV stations. Not sure why — outside of Nick’s drinking binges. Asta probably kept the drinks coming.

            • Fred Astaire movies used to be a tradition on another channel, but network programming pushed it out. There is nothing like Fred and Ginger doing The Continental across the screen for 17 1/2 minutes.

              • Rich, agree about Fred & Ginger as good holiday entertainment.

Those classic 30’s B&W films with Astaire/Rogers, usually filled with the songs and dances like “The Continental”, “All The Things You Are” and some of the best work from Cole Porter, Jimmy Van Heusen, Rodgers & Hart, Gershwin. Loved those waxed floors and walls. Always sparkling clean.

  2. We are, right now, in the second middle of the afternoon, drinking champagne, snacking on strong cheese, cold cuts, the finest patato crisps (chips), having candles burning to give this grey day some lure – I’m commenting my few favourite blogs and Hero Husband reads his faved newspapers online….. we’re listening to some music in the background and thus the New Year will surely arrive w/o too much trouble and fuss. It’s gonna be a ‘heavy’ one, we know it already.

  3. We’ll be walking down three houses to our daughters to share a New Years Eve meal, Rich. – No driving – I like that.
Happy New Year to you and yours.
