Last night’s pictures showed something I didn’t think was possible: the flying squirrels sharing the feeder with the raccoons. I’m sorry the pictures of the little ones aren’t great, but you can definitely see them this time. In one of the pictures, they are all lined up at the top of the feeder while the raccoons are munching down at the bottom.
Between one animal and another, a lot of food is getting consumed. Meanwhile, I’m better off feeding the raccoons because they get aggravated when the feeder is empty and they tear it off its moorings and mangle it before tossing it to the ground.
It also turns out they come at various hours. I thought they’d have a pattern, but they don’t. The creatures of the night come when they feel like it, anywhere from 8:30 in the evening until about 4:30 in the morning.

That row of white things on the top of the feeder are a line of flying squirrels eating from the top of the feeder while a pair of raccoons eat from the other end. Cooperation wins!
I had no idea what I was starting when I first put up a feeder. I had no idea how many creatures I’d be feeding. Everything is hungry and here we are, with seeds aplenty!

But for some reason, we didn’t get any raccoons last night. We did get a LOT of flying squirrels. Go figure.

Maybe they don’t like each other…I was wondering if raccoons are afraid of them?

It seems hardly likely. They are tiny and the raccoons are big and pretty strong. Raccoons can easily kill most cats and dogs.

Yes, I forgot that! Our cats have been attacked numerous times.

wow, this is a win-win situation as we’d only wish that we could achieve amongst human beings …. co-existing in peace and w/o fighting. You are marvellous and this may have been the best gift you’ve ever received (obviously not counting ‘getting’ Garry!!!)

Amazing, isn’t it? We seem to be the only critters that can’t really share. Bigot is our middle name.

I’m sure there are deer down in the woods, but we haven’t figured out how to configure the camera to get those shots yet.

And as long as we keep the feeders full, they don’t destroy anything. Heaven help us if we let them go empty!

Obviously, not including Garry. We have BOLOS out on Rocky and his misbegotten band of vagrants.

They can be a real problem. You don’t want to let the dogs out when they’re around either.

We don’t let the dogs out on the deck. I’m always afraid the Duke will jump the fence and fall two floors. And yes, we’ve lost cats and dogs to raccoons in the past. It would have to be one powerful dog to take on and beat a raccoon.
