PICK ME UP AND WINTER’S DAMAGE – GARRY ARMSTRONG

GARRY SEEKS SPRING IN UXBRIDGE

He hiked up the driveway, initially to bring down the trash can and pick up the mail, but he took a camera. It was a lovely day. There have been some lovely days, but very few last an entire day. Usually, the “good” day lasts part of the morning with sunshine and warmth leaving shortly after lunch. Then comes the afternoon with darkened skies and a lost sun.

The front woods and a lot of broken trees

Note wires. Note trees. Note likely disaster.

The broken branch lying over an electric line has been that way for a week, but apparently, they don’t have time to fix it because it hasn’t broken the line yet. It will. It sill take down the whole neighborhood. Nonetheless, it hasn’t done it yet. It would take them ten minutes to fix it now and it will we a catastrophe soon enough, but they can’t afford the ten minutes. I suppose I can call a third time.

They have records of my first two calls, but no one has bothered to even check on it. Owen has a pole saw, but it’s not long enough to reach the branch, so it will have to be a National Grid truck.

Rhododendrons have taken over for the roses,.

The road with hints of leaves to come

You can see that our Japanese Maple is in full leaf. It’s the first to grow leaves and the last to lose them.

I know there were flowers here, but I’m not sure what they were. I think there may be daffodils trying to bloom.

Called National Grid for the third time. They’ll get right on it. Major storm predicted for tomorrow night. I think we should get the candles ready.

  2. Our daffodils have bloomed already and now we just have the leaves. They came early and lasted a long time this year. I might as well dig up whatever tulip bulbs I can find. We have not had any flowers for a few years, just leaves. Lilies of the valley are next. We have a lot of those.

  3. Bottom pic looks like lupine or chives… just guessing.
Never did find your Japanese Maple but that tractor is awesome.
Buckle down for tomorrow or perhaps Sat for you Easterners… record cold and frost warnings … calling it a polar vortex… Nature is as pissed off as we are… we are pegged at 37 on the river… it is 75 now… will be foggy.

    • It might be lupine. We have a lot of plants I can’t recognize and I even bought a book, but I just can’t identify most of them. It’s going down well below freezing tonight, so all the more delicate flowers will die. And back in our COVID-riddled government, ugly things are happening.

      • I agree… about govt…. Trump nuts… with everything else going down the the crapper I don’t understand why Repubs. don’t drill down to the core of the situation and rid themselves of a tyrant, and the primary source of chaos around the world. Amed. 25 would do it, but I suspect that won’t happen. except in my dreams.

  5. You are not alone. We had the same non reactions several times. But because we’re the only house with all our ‘cablework’ spanning from the house across a road and across quick growing acacia trees, nobody ever was in a hurry to take some trees down or cut them shorter to not touch the wires and cables. One year we were three weeks without internet and telephone. 3 other times Hero Husband risked his life in order to ge the biggest branches out of the cables and wires…. Then the ‘Mairie’ people came and were gutted to see what could have happened – 10 days later, 3 weeks later….
YES, get those candles, storm lamps and pocket lamps out and check if you have batteries enough to last you for a good while.

    • There have been many explosions, fires, and disasters due to the electric and gas companies. They’ve killed a few hundred people in the past couple of years. They apparently aren’t done with the killing yet.
