CATALPA TREES IN BLOOM – Marilyn Armstrong

FOTD – July 3 – CATALPA BLOOMS

In addition to the flowers, we have a lot of Catalpa trees. They are supposedly hard to grow, but we didn’t grow them. They just grow around our property, almost like weeds. I think they are beautiful, but they do tend to pop up in the middle of the garden. All of a sudden, a Catalpa tree is growing in the middle of the tiger lilies.

I took a few pictures. I had to take these pictures from quite a distance away because these are pretty tall trees. They don’t bloom until they are quite big.

  3. You are in trouble. Not having knowingly ‘known’’ that tree, I looked it up and apart from being used for some medicinal reasons, it’s what I call a ‘weed’ tree…. It’s like the bloody acacias we had in France. Growing at an alarming rate, getting settled absolutely everywhere, with the added malus of having deadly thorns, etc etc. I really pity you.

  4. It’s a funny thing about the catalpa tree. We have one on a main square in town and I always admired the long bean similar seed pods it had, but had no idea what it was. It was only through Tony, one of our experts in WordPress, that I realised what it was. I had taken many photos of it. It is not really a typical Swiss tree, but now and again you find them. This year it had flowers and the seed pods from last year were still hanging on the tree, although the seeds had long gone.

    • Those seeds sprout often. We have a lot of baby catalpas. I had to cut down a dozen of them this year which is a pity because I love them, but they were crowding the driveway.

  5. I love the sound of “catalpa trees.” They sound so literary. This is the first one I’ve seen though. Thanks.

    • They are normally grown as decorative trees, but they seem to grow naturally around here. Right at the edge of the woods where the best sunshine is.

      • I have a huge, very old Catalpa tree at my little farm. The farmhouse was built in 1878, but I don’t know how long the tree has been growing. It is taller than two story house, and is absolutely beautiful! Right now it is in full bloom. I wish I could put a picture on here.

        • They are beautiful. If they like their location, they produce tons of seeds and baby catalpas. They are a big fragile and break easier than many other trees. Some of our most beautiful, oldest ones have snapped during storms.
