Questions:
In your opinion, what’s the closest thing to real magic?
Software. I know how it is written. I have written some myself. Nothing fancy, but enough to get a grip on how it is done. I have worked with databases (a lot) and designed databases.
But why does it work? Why do written words tell a machine to do anything? I’m not arguing about it’s functionality. Obviously it works and we get all kinds of aggravated when it doesn’t. But why on earth should a series of written commands make my computer function?
If it isn’t magic, it’s pretty close to it!
Where is the worst smelling place you’ve been?
The New York City subway. I grew up in New York and over all, many parts of New York are pretty stinky. By the time I was back on a subway, it had been more than 30 years since I’d ridden one.
It was overwhelming. Between the noise (people were talking on cell phones — how could they hear ANYTHING?), the crowding (body to body), and the stench … well … I’d forgotten how evil it was.
What are some things that you’ve heard in your own life, which sounded like compliments but were actually insults?
For a fat girl, you dress really well.
What incredibly common thing have you never done?
Rode on a Boston subway (the “T”). I took buses occasionally, we drove when we could — and mostly, we walked for miles rather than take public transport. We lived in the middle of town, so most places were within a mile or two at the most. Besides, with alternate side of the street parking and two cars, it was safer to grab a cab than ones own car.
Please feel free to share some gratitude that you experienced during the past week!
They are now publishing a county-by-county index of COVID cases. Our area of Worcester county is running very low, levels – about 2.5 cases per 100,.000 people. I’m not even sure we have 100,000 people in Worcester county. If we are careful, we may just come out of this alive.

“Magic”? How about Miracles?
“Worst smelling place”? Pass.
“Complimentary insults”? ??? Nothing comes to mind. Sorry.
“Common thing”? Drive a motorcycle. (Is that common?)
“Gratitude”? Life / Beingness / Existence is pretty big with me.
Hope you are enjoying Summer over there!

Thanks Marilyn for Sharing Your World! Computers in general (to me) are magic! But you’re right. I remember when I was really young and in school (to learn accounting), they taught us basic programming…the ones and zeros and the data chart. It was soon over my poor head. I’d toyed with becoming a programmer, and gave that up. Kudos to you for succeeding in writing some code! Wow! I’m happy to learn of the decrease in numbers of the virus back your way. It’s soaring out here, but between the dumb young ones who are clustering in groups of eight or more, and the tourists, I guess it’s to be expected. Me? I’m staying in my tree, counting my nuts!! Yay for squirrels and their beauty and Queen Anne’s lace and flowers, and best of all? Your beautiful photos! Thanks again Marilyn! 🙂

Just stay in that tree. Fresh air, free nuts, birds and squirrels. Sounds like a perfect place to stay until the others go somewhere else!

In answer to your first question, for me Sense Memory is magic. That moment when something happens- the smell of a plant, the feel of the wind, or a moment of light striking the world and I can travel in time, back to a place from long ago in my life. It’s beyond magic to me, it’s the closest I think an atheist can understand Heaven.
