FOTD – September 2 – Little Pink Roses
I haven’t done one of these in a long time because my flower garden is a horror show. We’ve had almost no rain. It has been exceptionally hot and humid, so no one has been outside to even try to care for the garden. Usually I get out there and do my best. I chop and hew until it looks at least acceptable. This year, I haven’t done it. The weather has been too hot for anyone with asthma. The longer the garden has gone without any care, the wilder it has gotten. Most of the garden has been taken over by Butterfly Weed, which should be good for butterflies, although I have not seen any butterflies despite the bonanza of flowering weeds.
Today, as we were coming home from voting, I stopped to see about the garden and surprisingly, some roses are actually blooming. That’s amazing given that we’ve had almost no rain and such extreme heat. Those are some sturdy roses. These are all pink, but there are a couple of red rose branches which look like they are thinking of blooming soon, too. Amazing. Everything is dying, but those barbed-wire roses just keep on going.

I have no flowers to offer as yet, hopefully next year. We too have had little rain and for asthmatics, it’s been rough. The leaves on some trees are turning, too early, but they are. I suspect it’s because we’ve had so little rain.

It’s the same all up and down the east coast. Very little rain, a lot of trees so dry they are snapping in half when the wind blows!

We might be into the same problem if we get high winds. We had houses and hydro and cars crushed last year due to this very problem.

These have almost as much impact as a gun! No burglars with THESE roses.

It is a lovely color. If only it wasn’t so thorny! But the colors are wonderful.

It was a good year for our garden even with the heat.

If I had been able to get outside more, I might I done better with the garden, but between COVID and asthma, the heat and humidity, it just didn’t work out. We’ll chop everything down in October and it will come back next year (hopefully).

It will come back next year. We’ll be doing a fair bit of chopping down too in the fall….

Those roses — aside from being murderously thorny — are lovely and they come in other colors — pink, white, and a variety of pink/red/white combinations. They were originally grown around mansions for protection — just the way we use barbed wire now. The roses are a lot prettier. It would take one hardy intruder to break through a hedge of those roses. They will tear your skin off and your clothing too.

I have seen their ilk here too. But then what’s a rose without thorns. 🌷🌹
