FOTD – December 4 – Tulip
I no longer grow tulips. I did. Until a couple of years ago, I got a bunch of them each year. They never seemed to be the same color twice. One year, they were all red or pink. Another year, yellow. Not a huge number of them, but I planted the bulbs when we made the garden and they grew for me.
Last year, we didn’t have any tulips for the first time in nearly 20 years. It’s possible that the bulbs were eaten by animals. Tulip bulbs are very popular eats for skunk, chipmunks, deer, and other creatures. Apparently they are tasty. I haven’t tried them. Not yet, anyway. Given the state of neglect of the garden, new plantings seem redundant.

Always lovely, they herald the spring.

I wonder what happened to all our tulip bulbs. I’m betting the skunks got to them. They are big time bulb munchers. They ate all my fancy Chinese lily bulbs, too.

I think they do “peter out” over time if they aren’t eaten.

We live in dreams of springtime to come — with the hope that life will start to show signs of something like “normal” again.

When we had bunches of them, they were sunshine yellow. But they were usually mixed a bit with pink and red ones. The bright red ones were also amazing. But none this year. I don’t know if the super snows and frozen ground killed the bulbs or a skunk ate them. Skunks are a major hazard to gardens and bulbs. And nobody wants to mess with them. They have super smelly powers.
