A BIG DAY FOR THE BIRDS

When I got up this morning, I wandered into the kitchen to see how much it had snowed overnight. It was just over a foot, which is more snow than we got all winter last year. More important that the amount of snow were that the birds were in a frenzy. Every bird that lives in our woods was trying to get to the feeders. The Juncos — there were so many of them — were having airborne battle, bonking into each other with lots of flapping.

There were Cardinals — orange and red. Sparrows. Blue Jays. Goldfinches, House Finches, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Hairy Woodpeckers. I threw a lot of seeds out onto the deck so the walking birds could eat, then Owen came up and put out the flat feeder and filled the other two. They calmed down for a while.

I couldn’t include all the pictures. I took more than 200 pictures in a very short time. Removing pictures where there weren’t any birds (oops) or it’s entirely out of focus, it was still more than 200 pictures. My almost new OMD EM-1 Mark II focuses really fast, so more shots than usual came out surprisingly sharp.

    • It’s the same story this morning. Birds need to eat their own weight in food every day — and more when it’s this cold. It is fortunate that our across-the-street neighbors ALSO feed the birds. It means that at least in this little pocket of woods, the birds will survive the winter.
