HERALDING SPRING: CROCUSES

FOTD – January 27 – Crocus

It has been snowing all day and it’s supposed to snow all night, though we aren’t supposed to get a lot of snow. That we are apparently saving for next week when they think we’re going to get just a wee bit buried. Crocus — the first flower of spring — our our little herald of the new season. When I see the crocuses, I know that spring can’t be far behind.

    • What’s really funny is the same bulb can bloom in any number of colors — in this case, white, yellow, or blue-purple. Some years they come up all one color, other in a variety.

  2. I love crocuses and have never seen one in person. These are glorious..Are they from past years or are they already popping up?

    • Oh, no crocus yet. I wish. These are crocuses from the past few springs. Depending on the weather, we get a handful or sometimes a lot more. If it’s not too cold, we get more of them. Right now, though, it’s about 9 degrees and snowing to beat the band.

We’ll see the crocuses around the end of February. They poke up right through the snow, unless we’ve had a really bad year and the snow is heavy on the ground. Crocuses are little flowers, only a few inches from the ground to the flower. They are one of the flowers I always have to shoot as a macro.
